Dear Men: We Know You Are Walking on Eggshells. Take Note: We are, too.

Wise Words at  Manhattanville College School of Business| Women’s Leadership Institute’s 4th Annual Women’s Leadership Summit

‘Dare to be Bold’…was ‘Dare to Evolve’

By Michel Gunn

June 8, 2018, Purchase, NY — So, the 800-pound elephant in the room is how we go forward after #Metoo, the Women’s March, and all the other movements that are happening. This was addressed head on with the opening statements from Kathy Meany, the WLI Director, Laura Persky the Director and The Honorable George Latimer.

At the Manhattanville College Women’s Leadership Summit: (L-R0: Jean Mann, Hon. George Latimer; Westchester County Executive, Nancy Barr; Westchester County Legislator | 6th District, Laura Persky , Gilda Bonanno, and Kathy Meany

As professionals, we had to admit there are tensions in our offices. When I mentioned that I was going to The Summit to my male colleagues, we could have heard a pin drop with the silence. I found myself backpedaling for words to make them understand that that didn’t mean they should be worried.

The Summit’s address for this was synonymous with mine. They gave me words like “as women, we aren’t here to analyze every action and word that comes out of a man’s mouth.  There will still be pockets of outrage when the situations are just unduly repressive and harassing.  But, we are past most of the ugly part.  Now, it is time for the moving forward.  And this moving forward with us—at your side as equals—will be AMAZING—because we can finally give all of ourselves.”

The goal of the summit to me were the answers to two vital questions:

  • How do we move forward and do great work with men, now?
  • How do we use this opportunity to be the BEST LEADERS for the advancement we envision and beyond?

HIGHLIGHTS

She called herself the Warm-up Band, 30- year Army Colonel, Col. (Ret.) Donna Brazil, was funny, knowledgeable and seasoned in successful leadership strategies.  She made us define ourselves, by defining the characteristics we gravitate to in our mentors and influencers.  She showed us that we too, have those qualities, that we probably weren’t using.

My take-away quote from her:  “If you’re leading no one but yourself, you’re still LEADING.”  (This gives me chills.)

Kathy Meany, in her quirky and funny way, she makes networking tactics reminders fun. Always important to review.

Vanessa Wakemen, Business Owner and Seasoned Speaker told us a story of DIVERSITY.  Basically, she was in a situation of being a diversity hire in the 1990’s, as a 29 -year-old woman, and a woman of color.  Her story of what she did with it was amazing.  If you every get to speak with her, ask her about what her mother told her to do.

Lunch consisted of our Honorable Catherine Borgia, Westchester County Legislator, 9th District.  In the fashion of the day, Ms. Borgia was a perfect addition, with her down-to-Earth manner and ability to relate to most in the room, as a mother and career woman. I was proud to have someone from my home town, and also with whom I have had the pleasure of working.*

We also heard from Manhattanville’s President,  Michael Geisler, Keia Clark and Adriana Kierszenbaum, Esq. as Food for thought to help us in our business with legal information and inspirational examples of success.

After lunch was really fun.  We played GAMES—With Gilda Bonanno—which got us ALL communicating on a higher level.

I know that sounds all hokey, but it was true, we had full bellies and brains, and were ready to LAUGH and exercise are qualities on each other.  The Games consisted mainly of how to improvise.  Which improvising is what good leaders do with suggestions from talent in meetings to nurture, along with when confronted with situations.

The games were also great to take back to our teams. Gilda was funny and really lightened the intensity of our learning.

MICRO-RESILIENCE –  OLYMPIC Medalist and Bestselling Author, BONNIE ST. JOHN graced us with multiple stories of triumph through adversity…and simple tactics to build RESILIENCE.

We heard of through odds of not just losing a leg as a child and growing up in a less-than wealthy family but suffering sexual abuse and the obvious obstacle of being a woman and a woman of color, she triumphed… all the way to a silver and two bronze medals in downhill events at the 1984 Paralympics in Innsbruck, Austria.

From Bonnie, we got inspired and listened to the concept of resilience.  She put it best when she said change isn’t slowing down, if anything it’s getting faster.  So, there won’t be that break time in the future, so learning resilience is how you strive and play to win.

More take-aways I got from Bonnie St. John to keep us in a direction of success:

  1. The Paralympics is the epitome of “not quite perfect” of Olympians. Use this as an example of just because something isn’t perfect looking, doesn’t mean that it won’t work. So, don’t wait to reach out to people, just because your elements aren’t ‘perfect’. Take a risk and do it.
  2. Designate a Zone for you to focus when you need to
  3. Working in teams works. When multiple people share a responsibility, your alliance to the team is better motivating than doing it alone.
  4. Define the REAL BOSS of your jobs. Put a picture of your end customer on your wall as the boss of your job(s), and every time you are deciding on a project, moving the company in a direction, ask yourself if this is the right move for the Boss.

In was an inspiring day that I know the women I met with make every effort to keep the afterglow alive until we meet again… or implement one to the techniques and reap the benefits.

The Women in the room gave me chills in terms of how open they were to learn for the betterment of, not only themselves, but of the environments and work cultures they want to cultivate.

I’m looking forward to next year’s Summit.  Thank you to The School of Business at Manhattanville College, and the Women’s Leadership Institute for the lessons and insights…and the cupcakes.

So, guys.  We’re in this together.

A Day in My Life of Shopping Locally–in June

June 5, 2018 by Inside Press

Shop Local enthusiast and blogger, Marlene Fischer

I know I am not alone when I say this Spring has been crazy busy. (Yes, I realize I say the same thing every year but it’s true!) During this hectic time of year I am grateful that I can get almost everything I need done right here in Armonk.

I start my errands with a trip to Framings on Main Street. Most of what hangs on the walls of my house has been framed by the talented, friendly and patient staff at Framings. While I don’t have much (or, actually, any) fine art, the folks there treat each item I bring in as if it’s a Renoir. I have framed my children’s artwork, family photos, certificates (like the one my youngest son received at Disney World that declares him a Jedi in training) and even a few of my favorite blog pieces. This time around I am proudly bearing my middle son’s diploma; he has just graduated college and I am happy to take advantage of the 20.18 percent discount Framings is offering on all diplomas. It doesn’t matter if your child just graduated from nursery school or received their  degree in neurosurgery, the discount will still apply!

Next, I pop in to Manny’s with my youngest son, who is in desperate need of a haircut. My husband and three sons have been getting their hair cut at Manny’s for 20 years; we even have video of my youngest looking somewhat alarmed as he gets his very first haircut there nearly 16 years ago (and I still have a lock of his hair from that day). From their early haircuts when they needed booster seats to their summer pre-camp buzz cuts to their bar-mitzvah cuts to their very important job interview haircuts, the team at Manny’s has been there for us. Hairstyles may change but our choice of barber shop will remain the same. My boys always get a kiss from me after their haircuts (because they look so handsome) and I never leave without getting a Tootsie Pop or large gumball.

I walk to DeCicco & Sons where I have been grocery shopping almost daily since it opened. Not to brag or anything, but I feel like a celebrity when I’m there (although I’m guessing that’s how they make everyone feel). I love shopping at DeCicco because the produce is exceptionally fresh, their fish is delivered daily, and they have one of the best gourmet cheese selections I’ve ever seen. Summer is the perfect time to choose from their extensive assortment of beers; if you have any questions, the knowledge staff is more than happy to help. DeCicco may not be the biggest grocery store, however, I am always amazed at how I can pretty much get everything I need there (I was even able to buy a graduation card). And if they don’t have something on my list, they are happy to get it for me. If you see me there, please say hello!

Since the weather has finally warmed up after the endless winter, I drive over to Beascakes Bakery for an iced tea lemonade and to order a platter of themed cookies for a weekend barbeque we will be attending. Last time I brought cookies from Beascakes, our friends called them crack because they couldn’t stop eating them; they were that good. And in case you were wondering, people prefer the white half of black and white cookies. End of the year parties? Father’s Day (which don’t forget is Sunday June 17)? Graduation or birthday celebrations? A wedding? Camp Visiting Day? College send off? Whatever the occasion, Beascakes has you covered with their custom cupcakes, cakes, fruit pies and donuts, as well as their Best of Westchester award-winning chocolate chip cookies. If you can imagine it, they can bake and decorate it.

My husband mentions he’s able to get out of work a little early and, since I don’t feel like cooking, I get spruced up (which is no small feat on a weeknight) and meet him at Gavi Restaurant. We have been regulars there for decades; the warm staff always makes us feel welcome. Our oldest son still requests we go there when he’s home for a visit. Although we eat there year round, I love Gavi even more in the summer. The outdoor patio is perfect for having a glass of wine and enjoying the weather; I actually feel as if we are away when we dine al fresco at Gavi. The spinach salad, pasta dishes and fish are among my favorite things to order, although I can also be tempted by the delicious specials  When we bring our whole family, dinner always ends with coffee or tea and the world’s best tartufo.

Wishing you all a fantastic summer; I hope it brings you fun, adventure and a sense of renewal. See you back here in the Fall when I will continue to shop locally!

Chic and the ‘TAUK of the Town’ in Armonk

June 1, 2018 by Grace Bennett

A new Armonk Square establishment is earning this designation–delivering a beachy, chic vibe–its walls adorned with local art. Serving now: New American food with a twist that is local, farm-fresh and fresh caught. Creative cocktails and outdoor dining are all part of the fun. This publisher stopped in during a festive Cinco de Mayo celebration to sample a few specials. At the friendly bar, I sipped on a tart, refreshing Blood Orange Margarita and savored a most satisfying salmon chowder, perfectly spiced with just the right touch of crème and teeming with fish. To reserve, call: 914-730-1144      — Grace Bennett

Additional background about Tauk:

The Chef

Tauk offers an inspired menu of New-American cuisine, emphasizing locally caught Montauk seafood, reputably sourced meats, local produce, craft cocktails and beers. The restaurant’s chef, Sean Fitzgerald, who hails from previous stints at Purdy’s Farmer & the Fish and Xaviers X20, combines his classic technique with a passion for street fare and a modern twist.

The Menu

The eclectic menu offers something for everyone, with options ranging from salads and sandwiches, to off-the-boat seafood, to hand-blended burgers, to steaks. Lobster rolls, wings three ways and mini tacos, along with ever-changing offerings, are always fresh, with a unique flair. The emphasis is on local, healthy, sustainable and seasonal ingredients, along with gluten-free, vegan and allergy-sensitive options, all at a reasonable price.

Creative Cocktails

In addition to the restaurant’s great food, the bar at Tauk, operated by General Manager Sue Vitello (previously from Armonk’s Moderne Barn) offers inventive and exotic cocktails, a selection of local craft beers and selectively chosen wines. Creative pairing with the chef’s selections and ingredients adds another level of gastronomic pleasure.

The Owner

With influences from his childhood vacations in Montauk, Leone envisioned and designed this restaurant to combine the best of land and sea. Its beachy interior and casual-chic flair create a relaxed, coastal-American theme. Says Leone, “I wanted to bring my own expression of Montauk’s vibe to Armonk for everyone to enjoy.”

Visit www.taukkitchen.com for special announcements or follow them on Facebook!

The Vibe

Food can be enjoyed surrounded by the driftwood finishings and local art, or if you prefer to dine at home, you can order to go or have it delivered. In the warmer months, outdoor seating in beautiful Armonk Square will be available.
