Vaping, Juuling and E-Cigarettes – What You Don’t Know Can Hurt Your Kids

January 14, 2018 by Inside Press

While our teens are well versed in vaping lingo, many are not well educated on the health risks those devices present. There is a further knowledge gap between what our kids know and what we parents do. Join us on January 18 at 7 pm in the Horace Greeley Auditorium for an informative presentation about vaping  featuring Robert Rhodes, HGHS Principal, Dr. Richard Stumacher, Chief of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Northern Westchester Hospital, Carolyn D’Agostino, HGHS Student Assistance Counselor and Robert Greenstein, Town of New Castle Supervisor.

This event is presented in collaboration between ew Castle United for Youth (NCUFY), the CCSD, the Chappaqua PTA and Northern Westchester Hospital Center. For more information about vaping, visit the “vaping, juuling and e-cigarettes” link in the Parent Toolkit.

Chief Charles Ferry is pleased to announce that the New Castle Police Department conducted alcohol compliance checks at 17 licensed establishments and that all businesses passed. These compliance checks were supported by New Castle United for Youth, a federally funded community coalition whose mission is to create a supportive and interconnected community for New Castle youth and their families by building relationships and addressing challenges that our youth face, including alcohol and other drug use, for the purpose of promoting a safe and healthy environment for our young people.

The department’s Alcohol Compliance Unit performed the checks during the month of November.  All establishments followed state laws and prohibited the sale of alcohol to a minor. The establishments visited include:

Hilltop Wines and Spirits

Chappaqua Wine and Spirits

Rite Aid

Walgreens

DeCicco & Sons

Dodds Liquor City

Rocky’s Deli

Millwood Market

Pizza 238

Chappaqua Station

Spoon Asian Fusion

Quaker Hill Tavern

Le Jardin Du Roi

Chappaqua Tavern

Aesops Fable

Old Stone Trattoria

Spaccarelli’s Italian Restaurant

Working in cooperation with the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office, the New Castle Police accompanied underage buyers who attempted to purchase alcoholic beverages.  Each location refused to serve buyers when they failed to present identification verifying that they were of legal drinking age.

Chief Ferry stated that a town wide alcohol sales compliance check was overdue and thanked the New Castle United for Youth Coalition for funding the initiative and for the work they are doing to keep alcohol and drugs away from New Castle youth.

New Castle United for Youth’s vision is a community where youth can thrive and lead happy, engaged, and healthy lives without the use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.  According to David Johns, NCUFY Coalition Coordinator, “In order to make that vision a reality, the Coalition, which is a volunteer driven organization, takes a comprehensive approach to preventing underage drinking.  Our hope is to not only increase awareness regarding the dangers and consequences associated with underage drinking, but to also greatly reduce youth access to alcohol and to encourage healthy lifestyle choices.”

Peter Somogyi–Survivor of Auschwitz and Mengele–to Speak at Boys and Girls Club on Jan. 7

December 23, 2017 by Inside Press

Save the date for what is sure to be an incredible speaker presentation at the Boys and Girls Club of Northern Westchester (BGCNW) on January 7 at 7 p.m.

Holocaust survivor Peter Somogyi will be speaking about his experiences during the Holocaust and how he rebuilt his life thereafter. Mr. Somogyi and his twin brother were selected by Dr. Mengele and endured time at Auschwitz as children.

This particular presentation is being promoted by two Greeley high school juniors Aaron Notis and Jason Fine who have been working closely with Millie Jasper, executive director the Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center, on bringing Holocaust speakers to wider audiences, “in hopes to reach people who are less familiar with the horrors of the Holocaust and the effects of prejudice and populist leadership,” stated Notis. “Last year, we brought a survivor to the Church of Holy Innocents, and he spoke to approximately 150 participants.”

“It is critical for people to hear these stories…now more than ever,” said Solveig McShea, director of development at BGCNW.

Tovi Farber Designs & Trunk Show Delight Holiday Shoppers at ICD

December 5, 2017 by Inside Press

By Stacey Pfeffer

ICD Contemporary Jewelry located in downtown Chappaqua hosted a trunk show featuring exquisite jewelry from celebrated designer Tovi Farber last weekend. Farber who hails from Israel creates jewelry utilizing gold and colorful semi-precious stones that celebrates every woman’s original, individual style.

Farber fans love the organic appeal of her jewelry and her unique sense of style with a keen eye for aesthetics. She embraces the interplay between structures, contrasts and intensities so every piece is distinctly styled and timeless.

Widespread Appeal for Farber’s Creations

Varda Singer, the owner of ICD Contemporary Jewelry which is the only retailer selling Tovi Farber designs in the Northeast, was thrilled to see how Farber’s holiday collection appealed to customers across a wide spectrum from millennials in their early 30s to baby boomers.

“Once the customers saw her collection they fell instantly in love with it. We didn’t have to sell it. Her beautiful designs sold themselves.” Singer also believes that Farber’s down-to-earth personality and willingness to listen to a customer’s needs helped make it a successful trunk show with record sales.

ICD Contemporary Jewelry is well known throughout the region for their unique redesigns using customer’s seldom worn jewelry that can be updated into bespoke pieces. Farber is a master at redesign and her sharp sense of style resulted in many custom orders at the trunk show. Holiday shoppers who were unable to attend the trunk show can still view Farber’s collection at ICD Contemporary Jewelry, which has extended hours throughout the holiday season.

“It’s not too late for customers to come in and place an order or create a customized piece,” commented Singer who has a long-standing relationship with Farber. Her collection will also be on view on Friday, December 8 during ICD Contemporary Jewelry’s annual holiday celebration at 6 p.m. with 10% of all purchases benefitting the Making Headway Foundation, a local non-profit dedicated to the care and comfort of children with brain or spinal cord tumors while funding medical research geared to better treatments and a cure. Gourmet treats and champagne will be served.

ICD Jewelry is located at 75 South Greeley Avenue. For more information on Farber’s collection or to RSVP for the event contact 914-238-3646.
