Two Global Scholars Students at Byram Hills Take Action to Mitigate the Political Divide

May 21, 2021 by Inside Press

On his last day in office in September 1796, George Washington warned the country of the dangers of political parties, cautioning that political parties were “…likely…to become potent engines…to subvert the power of the people…destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion.” Washington would surely be horrified by the American political landscape today, one wherein the two major parties play a divisive role. With the introduction of cable news in the 1990s, the media has ballooned from just a few networks to a  24-hour news cycle: newspapers, radio, television and magazines, and social media. In turn, consumers have the ability to find news that has been curated specifically to support a singular point of view: Democrats turn to CNN and MSNBC, and Republicans turn to Fox. There are also more options such as Newsmax and OANN, both of which disseminate hardline conservative viewpoints.

Students in the Byram Hills High School Global Scholars Program have been investigating ways to take action to make a difference on an issue of their choosing. Students Jacob Levy and Gina Schiliro have been motivated to educate New York residents on the dangers of political polarization, the divergence of political attitudes to ideological extremes, as families and friends have been torn apart due to the spread of misinformation. These students followed a design thinking process as they interviewed stakeholders, researched evidence, identified a problem area, and designed an action plan to address the problem.

The students have taken action by creating a Public Service Announcement to educate other students on the importance of examining multiple news sources and to analyze the point of view of the news sources they watch. They have also created an Instagram to spread their message (@fight_the_divide). The views of Americans today have become increasingly more polarized as it has become harder to hold conversations with family and friends with political views that differ from your own. This issue has been partly blamed on the various media sources such as newspapers, Twitter, televised news, social media, and so much more because of the misinformation or bias of each claim that they make. According to the Pew Research Center, nearly 80% of Americans have few or no friends at all who belong to an opposing party. To prevent the percentage from increasing, we must take action, such as promoting and sharing this PSA. Jacob and Gina plan to promote their PSA to multiple media outlets.

The political divide has become increasingly more prevalent in today’s society due to the influx of mass media through varied platforms that cater to a certain political bias. Under the Reagan administration, the Fairness Doctrine was removed through President Reagan’s implementation of the Federal Communications Commission. The Fairness Doctrine required all media to allow equal time for opposing views when not reporting straight news. The removal of this act is a major reason for the secularization of media sources today. These sources not only express their opinions on factual news now, but some have spread false information. This results in an increasing divide between the two political parties, ultimately dividing our nation. The PSA Jake and Gina created promotes the knowledge of news bias by understanding the facts and then observing the opinions of both sides. This allows for civil discussion no matter which party you belong since you both have been educated about the facts. For our country to heal, Americans need to learn to work together instead of against each other. This PSA offers a solution!

New Castle Holocaust Memorial Dedication: Wednesday, November 6th

November 2, 2019 by Inside Press

Planting daffodils: Alexandra Rosenberg (left) and Stacey Saiontz, co-chairs of the recently established New Castle Holocaust & Human Rights Committee.

Residents of the New Castle community will gather on Wednesday, November 6, at 6pm, to dedicate the New Castle Holocaust Memorial located by the Gazebo in the town of Chappaqua near 200 South Greeley Avenue. The opening of the Memorial will coincide with and commemorate Kristallnacht. The project is the fruit of the efforts initiated by New Castle residents Alexandra Rosenberg & Stacey Saiontz, the recently appointed chairs of the New Castle Holocaust & Human Rights Committee.

The New Castle Holocaust Memorial will serve as a place where individuals and families can come together to learn, to remember and to reflect on lessons from the Holocaust.

Last week 750 daffodil bulbs were planted at the memorial as part of the Daffodil Project, a worldwide project to commemorate the lives of the children lost during the Holocaust. The goal is to plant 1.5 million flowers across the world – one daffodil for every child killed. https://www.daffodilproject.net. As the daffodils begin to blossom in the spring the community will hold an annual event that coincides with Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, a day commemorating the six million Jews and other victims who lost their lives during the Holocaust.

The dedication of the New Castle Holocaust Memorial follows the creation of the New Castle Holocaust & Human Rights Committee and the Horace Greeley High School Club E.N.O.U.G.H. – Educate Now On Understanding Genocide and Hate.  The New Castle Holocaust & Human Rights Committee will work to educate our children and create community awareness about the Holocaust, other genocides and human rights violations.  The mission of E.N.O.U.G.H. is to empower students to stand up to hate and to develop a community of tolerance through education and the understanding of people’s differences.

Alexandra Rosenberg commented, “I proposed the idea for the New Castle Holocaust Memorial, the New Castle Holocaust & Human Rights Committee and the student run organization E.N.O.U.G.H. as a way to combat the significant rise in hate that is permeating our world, our children’s world and more specifically our schools.  The New Castle Holocaust Memorial will serve as a tangible reminder of the impact that each human being can have in creating positive change. Together, the residents of New Castle and the students of Horace Greeley will work to make sure that the horrors of the past never happen again.”

Stacey Saiontz commented “As Elie Wiesel stated, ‘the opposite of love is not hate. It is indifference.’ I am so happy that New Castle is taking action. The creation of the Memorial, the Committee and E.N.O.U.G.H. will serve as a platform to educate the community and future generations about the lessons of the Holocaust. The Holocaust did not start with the gas chambers and killing, it started with indifference to hate. We need to teach people to stand up to hate wherever it may fester. Never Again.”

New Castle Town Supervisor Rob Greenstein stated “This is one of the most meaningful projects that I’ve worked on over the last six years. It’s crucial that we remember the lessons of history and provide future generations with the tools to combat hate and bigotry. The idea for these projects started in the heart of New Castle resident, Alexandra Rosenberg, who along with fellow resident, Stacey Saiontz, have led these incredibly important initiatives. I want to thank them for their efforts.”

The materials for the memorial as well as the landscaping, were generously donated by Manzer Landscape Design & Development.

May 31, 2018 by Inside Press

During Gay Pride Month, a diverse group of local faith communities will be offering “Faith and the LGBT+ Community” on Thursday, June 21 at 7:15 p.m., at Temple Israel Center, 280 Old Mamaroneck Road, White Plains. A panel of advocates and allies of the LGBT community will be speaking. The Rev. Dr. Martha Jacobs, Senior Minister at First Congregational Church in Chappaqua, will be offering a prayerful litany during the event. All are welcome.

Rev. Dr. Martha Jacobs

As featured in Inside Chappaqua in October of 2016, Dr. Jacobs talked about her finding FCC to be an open and welcoming community for she and her spouse, Pat Yost, and her reasoning for accepting a call to serve at FCC in 2014. She found FCC to be a place that welcomed all people and she embodies that spirit as she serves not just FCC but the wider New Castle Community.

For further information about the event, and to RSVP to  AJC Westchester/Fairfield: ajcwestfair-LGBT.eventbrite.com or call 914-948-5585.
