Korth & Shannahan: A Dynamic Family-Owned House Painting Business

August 18, 2023 by The Inside Press

Will Korth, owner and founder of Korth & Shannahan Painting and Carpentry, started his career in the painting industry at the young age of 14. As a teenager, Will painted houses during his summer breaks from Horace Greeley High School. He started from the bottom of the ladder (literally) and climbed his way to the top of the company. Today, Will is the leader of a 40-person team of professional painters and carpenters that are dedicated to making Westchester a more beautiful place to live.

Founded in Family, Rooted in Westchester

For 44 years, the core values of Korth & Shannahan Painting have been founded in family. Today, owner Will is joined by his daughter Olivia Korth as she steps into the family business. Olivia is putting her Business Administration degree to use in her new role as the Director of Marketing & Recruitment for Korth Painting. Now the second generation to join her family business, Olivia finds her now role to be both challenging and exciting. This father-daughter team is tackling Westchester’s house painting industry head on.

Working with family surely comes with its benefits and challenges for this father-daughter duo. Will and Olivia both love working together every day and have become even closer than they were before Olivia came into the business. The pair certainly had to learn how to balance life and work as they navigate this new dynamic. In Olivia’s words, “We try not to ‘talk shop’ at home, or ‘talk family’ at the office. It’s all about balance.”

The perks of trusting a local and family-owned business are clear to Korth’s new and returning customers. When you call Korth & Shannahan to set up an estimate, Olivia is the one to pick up the phone. From there, she’ll send Will over to your home to provide an estimate for your project. There’s nothing better than working with a local family business.

Industry Leaders

Will Korth and his daughter Olivia Korth

Over their 44 years in the House Painting industry, Korth Painting has adapted to become the industry leader in the Westchester area, all the while keeping their roots firmly grounded in their local history.

Will Korth and his team are deeply committed to providing the highest quality workmanship for their customers. As Will says: “Customer service drives the bus.” Their outstanding service and attention to detail results in many repeat customers and long-lasting client relationships. One of Will’s favorite parts of the job is seeing the long-time customers that he painted for when he was a teenager. More than 40 years later, his customers still trust him to handle their home’s painting and carpentry needs.

Some of the notable customers the Korth team paints for include the Clintons, Clive Davis, and the Zabar family. Will is also proud of the work he’s done for local organizations such as the New Castle Historical Society and the Bedford Presbyterian Church. “Painting the Horace Greeley House was certainly a feather in our cap,” notes Will, who’s painted some of Westchester’s most notable historical buildings over the years.

A family owned and operated business like Korth & Shannahan Painting understands what it means to be dynamic. They’ve pivoted through five decades of change and survived a global Pandemic, using every challenge they’ve faced as an opportunity to learn and change with the times.

“Our customers will always get a team I know and trained, which ultimately results in consistently happy customers” says Korth. From their original service area of Chappaqua, Korth has expanded his base to now serve Northern and Southern Westchester as well. Armonk, Bedford, Pound Ridge, Mount Kisco, Chappaqua, Scarsdale and Rye are where Korth sees many of his customers. Will also provides a four-year warranty on every job he completes, which is double the industry standard. The team at Korth Painting works hard to stay ahead of new color trends, provide in-person color consultations, train their painters on new paint products, and find the best methods of paint application – all in the name of phenomenal customer service.

White Plains Hospital and Montefiore Bring Pediatric Specialty Care to White Plains

August 18, 2023 by The Inside Press

With a new office dedicated to specialty conditions in children, White Plains Hospital and Montefiore commit to expanding pediatric care in Westchester.

Advanced pediatric care in Westchester became more convenient with the opening of the new Montefiore Pediatric Specialty practice. Pediatric cardiologists, pediatric gastroenterologists, pediatric surgeons, a pediatric rheumatologist and a pediatric nephrologist from the renowned Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) are now seeing patients at 33 Davis Avenue in White Plains.

Unlike general pediatricians, pediatric subspecialists are the only physicians uniquely qualified to diagnose, treat, and manage infants, children and adolescents with specialized complex, chronic conditions. They also focus on the developmental and emotional needs of children and adolescents, which can be different from those of adults.

“Having access to advanced pediatric care, closer to home, is so important for families,” says Frances Bordoni, Executive Vice President for Ambulatory and Physician Services and Business Development at White Plains Hospital. “Montefiore has some of the best pediatric specialists in the country. To bring these services to Westchester eliminates barriers and heightens peace of mind for families who no longer have to scramble to get their children the care they need.”

Through its partnership with Montefiore Einstein and CHAM, which has long been recognized as one of the nation’s best pediatric hospitals by U.S. News & World Report, White Plains Hospital enhances its pediatric specialty care in several critical areas with the addition of nationally recognized specialists who are leaders in their respective fields and actively engaged in clinical research to advance their respective specialties.

CHAM’s Pediatric Heart Center is a world leader in advanced cardiovascular care for patients of all ages, from newborns to adults with congenital heart diseases. Pediatric cardiologist Dr. Daphne Hsu is one of the nation’s leading experts in children’s heart failure and heart transplantation. In addition to caring for pediatric and adult patients with congenital heart disease, Dr. Hsu conducts ongoing clinical research and is a nationally recognized pediatric cardiologic thought leader.

For children with gastrointestinal conditions, liver disease, or nutritional concerns, CHAM offers one of the leading pediatric gastrointestinal (GI) programs in the nation, led by Dr. John F. Thompson. Dr. Thompson specializes in short bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, celiac disease, eosinophilic esophagitis, feeding disorder, and chronic abdominal pain. Dr. Thompson is also the director of the Intestinal Rehabilitation Program at CHAM. His research focuses on ways to improve the lives and outcomes of children who have intestinal failure and short bowel syndrome.

In addition, pediatric gastroenterologist Dr. Gitit Tomer leads CHAM’s Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) program, which is dedicated to providing excellent care and improving the health and quality of life of patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), including Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). IBD are chronic relapsing inflammatory gastrointestinal diseases causing severe diarrhea abdominal pain and weight loss that can lead to life-threatening complications.

CHAM also offers nationally-recognized care for pediatric patients with kidney conditions. Dr. Frederick Kaskel, an internationally recognized expert in pediatric nephrology, who specializes in the treatment of kidney disorders in infants, children and adolescents and in end-stage kidney replacement therapy and transplantation, is Chief Emeritus of its Division of Pediatric Nephrology. The Ira Greifer Children’s Kidney Center includes New York state’s first dedicated pediatric dialysis facility.

“We are delighted to enhance access to our team of pediatric subspecialists, many of whom have raised their own children in Westchester. No matter the symptom, condition or question, our team is ready to care for children and families in need of sophisticated specialty care at the Davis Avenue location,” said Michael D. Cabana, MD, MPH, Physician-in-Chief, The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore and The Michael I. Cohen, MD, University Chair, Department of Pediatrics, Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Northern Westchester’s Comprehensive State-of-the-Art Dental Practice with a Personalized Touch

August 18, 2023 by Sara Richman

Dr. Dana G. Keiles, DMD and Dr. Seth Keiles, DMD at their Yorktown location   Photo by Carolyn Simpson

When you enter the serene and modern offices of Northern Westchester Dental Care (NWDC), you will sense that this differs from your average dental practice, Drs. Dana and Seth Keiles strive to have every staff member treat patients like family. They’ll even take your picture at your first appointment so their staff can get to know you.

Their team understands dental-related phobias and strives to make each visit as comfortable and relaxing as possible, as reflected in the peaceful vibe of the newly renovated Yorktown office.

Location to Briarcliff Manor

Although the Keiles are expanding their practice by recently acquiring the office of Dr. Alan Miller in Briarcliff (renamed Briarcliff Dental Care), they give their offices a “boutique” feel. They believe in treating one patient at a time and giving them their undivided attention.

Whole Body Dentistry

Longtime residents who have raised their family in Chappaqua, the Keiles, and their colleagues practice “holistic dentistry,” meaning they look at patients’ overall health and wellness when creating a customized care plan – oral health is often a mirror of overall health. The Keiles describe their practices’ philosophy: “It’s more than just teeth; it’s about treating people.”

Patients of NWDC rarely need to be referred to outside specialists as they have a range of dental specialists under one roof. The staff includes oral surgeons, cosmetic dentists, orthodontists, and anesthesiologists.

Advanced Technology to Benefit Patients-The NWDC Lab

3D Imaging

Patients of NWDC benefit from the latest dental technologies that make treatment highly individualized, quicker, and more comfortable. One high-tech tool is CBCT, an advanced technology to create high-resolution 3D images of the body. CBCT systems are used in dentistry, maxillofacial imaging, and other medical and industrial applications.

Northern Westchester Dental Care’s CBCT system provides detailed images of the head and neck that are impossible with traditional 2D X-ray technology. The images help to diagnose and treat various issues, including tooth decay, bone loss, periodontal disease, dental abscesses, and tumors. Images also include information about anatomy and nerve location. An added benefit is that CBCT delivers significantly less radiation to patients than traditional 3d imaging.

3D Printing for In-house Appliances

The Keiles have built an in-house dental lab where their SprintRay 3D printer can produce the necessary appliances and implants for patients, including retainers, night guards, and clear aligners. Prior to production, 3D renderings for these devices are created through the use of a radiation-free intra-oral scanner.

On-site Crowns and More

Northern Westchester Dental Care is also a select digital dental practice that has invested in the CEREC Intra-oral scanner and production mill. Dental crowns, implant crowns, inlays, onlays, and bridges are created on-site. Northern Westchester Dental Care scans, designs, and mills these restorations in the office and can even do same-day crowns.

From general family dentistry and specialty care to cosmetic dental services, such as teeth whitening and veneers, NWDC’s experienced dentists and team dedicate themselves to helping you achieve the healthy and beautiful smile you deserve.

Tanya Tochner Takes Her Flair for Design to the Next Level to Transform Homes

August 18, 2023 by Ella Ilan

ROCKS Jewelry Gifts Home Design owner Tanya Tochner          Inside Press Photo

With her Chappaqua jewelry and home store now in full bloom, ROCKS Jewelry Gifts Home Design owner Tanya Tochner has spread her wings to run a successful interior design business. Tochner applies the same creative eye and talent that she has used to curate her beautiful store to designing people’s home spaces.

As a Chappaqua resident for 22 years, Tochner feels right at home at her store in Chappaqua Crossing. The store carries affordable fine jewelry and accessories for the home. Many customers are people that she has known for years and whose children have grown up alongside her children. Some store customers have developed into interior design clients over the last few years.

Before
After

Design in all its Forms

For Tochner, the interior design business naturally evolved. It began with store customers, fond of her home accessories, asking her to come to their homes and help them accessorize. These home consults gave rise to requests for her to renovate an entire bathroom or kitchen. Tochner now has a general contractor, an architect, and a team of professional tradesmen that she works with regularly to tackle any renovation from soup to nuts.

Word of mouth has spread and Tochner has found herself incredibly busy with a steady stream of clients. She attributes the rapid growth of her interior design business to everyone having spent so much more time at home due to covid and thus deciding to redo their homes.

In addition to designing homes and running the store, over the last year, Tochner was presented with and seized on the opportunity to stage luxury homes and apartments for real estate sales in Westchester and New York City. This new undertaking developed organically from having the store and doing interior design.

“This business that started off as a jewelry business fifteen years ago, me being a jewelry designer, expanded into home which became interior design which became that plus staging, so it’s all come full circle,” reflects Tochner. “But at the end of the day, it’s all about design. That’s what I love.”

The Brick-and-Mortar Advantage

As the owner of Rocks, Tochner finds it easier to source products than the typical interior designer. She has access to over 300 vendors so she sees more furniture, art, and accessories than many designers.

“As a brick-and-mortar, I have an advantage because I can offer deeper discounts to my clients with my dealer discount, rather than an interior designer discount, so I pass that along. There is also an element of immediate gratification since I carry stock so a client can just come into the store and we can pull from the store,” Tochner explains.

Why Hire a Designer

Tochner recommends hiring an interior designer because it helps clients stay on budget. Clients also save money with access to designer discounts. Additionally, she points out that “you may know what you like but not know where to find it.” A designer can help you source things for your space.

Tochner says her first consultation with a client is crucial to understanding her client’s aesthetic and what they want for their home. It is a collaborative process taking into account the client’s wishes, their needs, and how they intend to use the space.

Although her personal style is very modern, Tochner has designed spaces that are contemporary, traditional, mid-century modern and more.

“It’s all about listening to my client and making it personalized because it’s their space, not mine. Some people know what their aesthetic is, but for the ones that don’t, I can guide them through options.”

Satisfied client Lisa Schwartz says, “Tanya is an absolute pleasure to work with. She has an incredible eye for color, texture, and layout. She creates spaces that are chic but also comfortable and inviting. Tanya has helped transform my home and I couldn’t be happier with the results!”

To reach Tochner, email her at tanya@rocksjewelrygiftshome.com or call the store at (914) 219-5808. Rocks is located at 480 Bedford Road in Chappaqua.

Back to School Tennis Opportunities at the Armonk Tennis Club

August 18, 2023 by Gracie Eisenberg

Where ‘Connection & Consideration’ Rule

Staff at Armonk Tennis Club

Are you seeking a back-to-school tennis course for your child? If so, do consider the well-regarded programming options – and working with highly experienced and caring coaches – at Armonk Tennis Club. There, you’ll find different levels and courses for children ages 4-18 through their Junior Development Program and Armonk International Tennis Academy. There’s an option for any tennis-loving child!

When asked what makes the club’s tennis programs unique, Tennis Director Doug Sherman offered: “The quality of the coaching. And continuity.” He explained further: “We’ve had a lot of the same core coaches around for a while, so they’ve established a lot of good relationships with the players. There’s a level of connection and consideration.” Allie Cooper, a recent Byram Hills High School graduate and longtime player at Armonk Tennis Club adds “I remember my first day at Armonk Tennis with Doug. I was so afraid of disappointing him, but he was so supportive. Now I have a great relationship with him and all of the coaches. I’ve loved getting to bond with them and other players through such a great sport in an equally great community.”

Beau Shea, the club’s Marketing Manager, described different programs offered at Armonk Tennis, as well as at Armonk Indoor Sports Center, which is under the same ownership and therefore works hand in hand to develop junior players.

The Junior Development Program is the foundational course and can be joined by anyone ages 4-16. It is suitable for beginners, players looking to progress at a less demanding pace, or any child looking to focus on fun.

Armonk International Tennis Academy, on the other hand, is a program for players who strive for more competition and challenge. Within the Academy, children ages 7-18 can follow one of two paths. The High Performance path, based at Armonk Indoor, is for tournament-level players, while the Team path is for kids with more modest goals, such as to play on their school tennis team.

For details about upcoming programming and special events, visit armonktennis.com.

In addition, Armonk Tennis Club will accommodate any child with various challenges and special needs and will work with the family to explore the appropriate route to follow.

Overall, Armonk Tennis offers a wide variety of courses for all children who are interested in learning and strengthening their tennis abilities.
