This Weekend: Chappaqua Performing Arts Center Kicks Off Inaugural Season 9/23

September 20, 2017 by The Inside Press

Opening Night Features Acclaimed Jazz Vocalist CYRILLE AIMÉE Performance and Love Art Gallery Exhibit / Reception Saturday September 23

CHAPPAQUA, NY –  Westchester County’s new hidden treasure, Chappaqua Performing Arts Center, is finally ready to officially open its doors this weekend.

The inaugural season kicks off Saturday, September 23 with an opening night concert by the acclaimed jazz vocalist CYRILLE AIMÉE at 8:00pm. Tickets are $25-$75 are available in advance at Ticketmaster.com, by calling 1-800-745-3000 and in person on the night of the show in the lobby box office.

Patrons are encouraged to arrive early to enjoy an entire evening of rich artistic experiences. Chappaqua Performing Arts Center has partnered with the LOVE ART Gallery to present a pop-up exhibition and reception entitled “Art for Positive Social Change” taking place in the lobby of ChappPAC from 4:00 to 7:00pm. The exhibition will feature a group of twelve artists from Connecticut and New York sharing a cross section of works focusing on social issues from race, to feminism to politics.

Described as “one of the most promising jazz singers of her generation” by the Wall Street Journal, CYRILLE AIMÉE is a vocalist with French and Dominican roots who fell in love with gypsy music and its culture heritage at an early age. Aimée grew up in Samois-sur-Seine, France – a village best known as the home of gypsy guitar icon Django Reinhardt – and its little wonder that its legacy resonates throughout her performances and recordings. In recent years Aimée has toured and recorded in a variety of ensembles configurations, among them, various duet projects with  Brazilian guitarist Diego Figueiredo. Her rich hybrid of influences has resulted in an award-winning vocal style that incorporates gypsy swing with Brazilian rhythms and melodies into well-known standards and original compositions that led the New York Times to proclaim, “No other young artist gives me hope for the future like Cyrille Aimée, the brilliantly inventive jazz vocal prodigy.”

Located on the former campus of Reader’s Digest in a building once known as the Wallace Auditorium, the 425-seat Chappaqua Performing Arts Center — or ChappPAC for short – was recently saved from demolition and established to provide a blend of local and national arts and cultural programming for people throughout Westchester County and the region.

Cider, Donuts and Racing Mark Chamber’s Fall Festival

August 23, 2016 by The Inside Press

By Justin Ellick

The 5th Annual Cider and Donuts Festival, previously called the Armonk Fall Festival, is coming to Wampus Brook Park. The event, sponsored by the Armonk Chamber of Commerce, will be held Sept. 18 and gathers residents and merchants of Armonk to welcome the changing of seasons and to reflect on yet another spectacular summer.

Cider & Donut 5

The festival, which brings together the town’s residents for a day of activities each year, focuses on Armonk’s long history as a cider and donut hotbed. Over the years, the festival has grown rapidly, with more events and more guests showing up every year. Last year was the first year the Cider and Donut Festival partnered up with Jamie’s 5K Run for Love, and the Chamber of Commerce is confident that the race’s popularity and participants will skyrocket this year as a result of the great success of last year’s festival. This year, the Chamber decided to add on another wing to the festivities, as the Byram Hills Pre-School Association and its annual carnival will join the fun. With so many activities to get through in so little time, people are excited to see what kind of impact the festival has on the small hamlet of Armonk.

“Ideally we’d like the festival to serve as a way of getting Armonk values and the people who display them out in the open a little more,” said Neal Schwartz, president of the Chamber of Commerce. “Armonk is filled with many small businesses trying to expose themselves to a wider range of consumers. The festival offers a great opportunity for these small-business owners to increase business as well.”

The festival, running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., is the largest it’s ever been. The fun will start with some races, as the kids will get a chance to test their speed with the Donut Dash (ages 2-8) at 10 a.m., followed by the McIntosh Mile at 10:10 a.m. After the children have had their fun, Jamie’s 5K Run for Love is set to begin at 10:30 a.m. This portion of the festival is a continuation of a popular annual event, with runners coming from all over to honor the late Jamie Love, who was a track and field star at both Byram Hills High School and the University of Vermont. This year, net proceeds from the run will benefit the North Castle Public Library’s children’s programs along with the Armonk Chamber of Commerce, so that the town can continue to run popular programs and events.

Once the festival and races start at 10 a.m., non-racing attendees can jump right into the Cider and Donut Festival games and activities. These will include donut fishing, as well as pie-eating contests and dunk tanks. The donuts, from Beascakes Bakery, will be freshly out of the oven, practically melting in festivalgoers’ mouths. To accompany the donuts, there will be plenty of apple cider to go around.

This year, the festival is merging with another popular Armonk event in the Pre-School Association Fall Carnival. This will also get underway at around 10 a.m., with rides and activities for children, as well as pizza and ice cream. The festival has become an Armonk tradition, and one that continues to grow.

“Our first year, all we had was a couple of booths and limited activities, along with the fact that not many people attended the festival,” continued Schwartz. “In under five years we’ve been able to grow significantly the festival and the events it offers, and in turn have attracted more and more people every year.”

The Cider and Donuts Festival has quickly become one of Armonk’s biggest events of the year, as local merchants and residents of Armonk look forward to coming together as a community.

Fall is an amazing season. The fashion is especially fun:  structured blazers, thick boots, and boyfriend jeans.  It’s a beautiful one in Chappaqua–and the busiest! School starts! Work gets crazy; you may have been working the entire summer but the Tuesday after Labor Day is always a bit more hectic?  You may well find yourself/entire family completely booked in September/October/November:  driving kids to soccer practice/playdates/birthday parties/Dunkin Donuts (they seem to all get hungry), and picking up a blueberry pie at the Farmer’s Market (it’s just that good!). If you’re feeling ambitious, you make a stop at Community Day, this year on September 26th, so your two-year-old can hit that bouncy castle.

Bottom line: You are always running short on time; also, you just moved here; all you own are your “city” clothes (you know the ones you wore before you had kids?). Maybe you have too many work clothes? Or you’ve been meaning to buy a new wardrobe, but who has time to drive to and from the mall (and who wants to pay for parking anyway)?

Here’s our solution…check out our stores in town! You’ll save time.  You’ll receive impeccable service. And you might even find something to wear that’s a trade up from that old uniform.  Take a moment to check out what this town has to offer this fall season–I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised!

Touted as the store for the entire family, Squires Family Clothing and Footwear has great brands and an amazing selection year round.

You can find a Patagonia fleece for chilly summer nights and it’s the go to store for busy, casual, days. In Nicole’s case, she’s got three kids (ages 3 to 10); she’s constantly on the move. Comfort and function is essential. Grey stretch pants, an Army green rain coat with hidden hood, and motorcycle boots serve her well. She popped on a few accessories to enhance her look. For the weekend, Trent swapped his track pants and sneakers for grey corduroys, comfortable walking boots, and, the Arc’teryx vest, a best seller at Squires. Trent bought it unprompted right after the photo shoot–enough said!

A new addition to the hamlet, House of 29 showcases up and coming designers, looks from day to evening.  Sarah, the owner, grew up in Chappaqua. Her goal: Find you an entire outfit to suit your lifestyle. With a structured blazer over a vintage Billy Joel tee (does anyone not like Billy Joel?), and boyfriend skinny jeans, Cheryl looks casual but sharp. Discovering a good pair of jeans is like discovering Shangri-La. These Mavi ones fit her like a dream. Utilizing the scarf as a head band, Cheryl’s crystal blue eyes just popped. To complete the look, she added delicate pieces of jewelry.

Perhaps Friday night you’ll meet your spouse at Le Jardin du roi, our always popular and reliable French Bistro. For Trent, he’s hopping off the train wearing a reversible Zegna overcoat–wool on one side, waterproof on the other, cashmere sweater over a button down, and blue slacks–pow! Family Britches assembled this entire look together because this is what they do best. They artfully curate wardrobes for their clientele. Plus they will accommodate your schedule by meeting you at your home or office, delivering to your house, and providing alterations free of charge on purchased merchandise. For the women’s look, Alex is wearing slim leather pants, a cashmere sweater, and rabbit infinity scarf. If you look good in black stretchy pants, logic says that you’ll look even better in leather, black, stretchy pants. Colorful bling from ICD Contemporary Jewelry and a handbag from Couture Dossier elevate her look.

With this breadth of merchandise, you’ll find something that suits your lifestyle right here in Chappaqua.  Fall is such a great time in this town.  Enjoy it. And enjoy looking good.
