No Shortage of Adventures in New Castle

June 3, 2016 by The Inside Press

Publisher and Editor Grace BennettA single weekend in May might be enough to convince any visitor that “the adventurous spirit” (our issue’s theme) is alive and well in New Castle. The weekend of May 14th and 15th, as we headed into our print close, had no fewer than five major events rocking our town! First, the weekend kicked off on the 13th to offer three days of great old fashioned fun (featuring games, bouncy castles and karaoke too!) via a Spring Festival and Craft Fair at the Church of St. John and St. Mary Church on Poillon Avenue. Saturday morning, the vendors of the Chappaqua Farmer’s Market were outside of Chappaqua Station with all their glorious, healthful offerings.

At the Bell School, the district’s annual STEM Fest had started too; more about the PTA’s amazing undertaking on page 6. And while that was underway, the Chappaqua-Millwood Chamber of Commerce members held “It’s a Beautiful Day” to entice families into town, and meet with First Responders from the Chappaqua Volunteer Ambulance Corps., Fire Departments, Police Department, or to tour Town Hall, the historic Greeley House or the Chappaqua Library, all participating organizations. “Chamber members who sponsored the events offered coupons and gifts too,” noted Dawn Dankner Rosen, president of the Chamber. The Chappaqua Garden Club was also on hand to introduce residents to their beautification efforts for the town.

And finally, on Sunday, the 15th, the annual beloved New Castle 10k race took off, with a new 5k option added, widely opening participation!

And there’s the rest of the spring/summer–a Chappaqua Orchestra concert, a fundraiser for the Chappaqua Children’s Book Festival (featuring Rosemary Wells!), Greeley’s truly inspiring Relay for Life, Art Around Town and the always spectacular Memorial Day parade. It is enough to make any diligent hyperlocal editor’s head spin, but there’s no denying the high energy individuals here who encourage us to partake in all New Castle has to offer!

It’s June now as you read this; dads rule, so please do enjoy our focus on fathers in this edition. I’m proud of so much in it including Andrew Vitelli’s cover story on Assemblyman David Buchwald who so courageously fights political corruption. Don’t miss Matt Smith’s profile of Todd Shapera, a globetrotting photo journalist and award winning events photographer, who we asked to photograph Buchwald, in fact. I hope all our adventurous and spirited dad stories inspire you this Father’s Day! Happy Graduation too, to all our departing seniors. You will be missed.  — Grace

Discover the New Castles of the World!

April 27, 2016 by Inside Press

By David Falkner

Did you know that there are more than 100 different “New Castles” or “Newcastles” around the globe, in many different countries and in many different languages? Not only that, but many of them are directly connected through the “Newcastles of the World” network or alliance.

The idea of bringing together places around the world that share the name “New Castle” in the English language came in 1996 from the England-based arts manager John Nicolaou in Newcastle upon Tyne. He created the “Newcastles of the World United” project, which resulted in a book with this title, covering 25 of the Newcastles of the English-speaking world. The aim was to foster links of friendship, culture, education and tourism.

However, there are also many New Castles in the non-English speaking world and, following a visit to Newcastle-under-Lyme in England, it was the mayor of one of them, in Shinshiro, Japan, who took the initiative to bring the Newcastles together via the Newcastles of the World summit. The first took place in Japan in 1998 with delegates from Newcastle (South Africa), Neuburg-an-der-Donau (Germany), Neuchâtel (Switzerland), New Castle Indiana (USA), New Castle Pennsylvania (USA), Newcastle-under-Lyme (England) and Neufchateâu (France) joining their hosts.

Since then, New Castles have met together every two years and more of them have become involved. The only conference in North America was in 2002 when the co-hosts were the New Castles of Indiana and Pennsylvania. But the gathering returns to North America this year when the alliance will meet in Newcastle, Ontario, Canada (near Toronto) from 19th to 23rd September. And the New Castles or Newcastles of the US are being extended a warm invitation to attend.

That invitation is not only to the mayor and other elected representatives but to tourism agencies, chambers of commerce, community groups and to interested individuals. Our Newcastles of the World alliance is about helping our different communities learn from each other and find areas of common interest which we can pursue together.

We link schools through our Global Schools project, and soon we will be launching our Newcastles “Passport” scheme that encourages tourism between us all through special offers and hospitality”.

Meanwhile, increasing tourism will be one of the conference themes in Canada, alongside the sharing of experiences about creating “age-friendly” towns and cities and many other topics and study trips.

David Faulkner is a city councilor in Newcastle upon Tyne, England and was Leader of the Council in 2010/11 (and Deputy Leader for the four preceding years). He acts as coordinator of the Newcastles of the World network on behalf of those mayors around the world whose towns and cities are involved in the initiative. He has been involved with an extensive range of charities and projects in his home Newcastle, and was given an award by Her Majesty The Queen in 2000 in recognition of this work.

Chat with the Chamber of Commerce: You Asked, They Answered!

March 4, 2016 by Inside Press

A Chappaqua-Millwood Chamber of Commerce “Ask me Anything” event at Crabtree’s Kittle House gave 14 business owners and consultants a chance to share their business acumen with New Castle residents. The casual gathering drew visitors who were invited to rotate from table to table in ten minute segments following introductions of each presenter at the podium.

Good humor was in abundance. “I’ll try to be brief,” said Vinnie Milazzo, owner of the Chappaqua Village Market, “but I do have four years of stories to tell.” Local healer Benadette Bloom described herself as a “medical intuitive.” “I’ll also teach you to do what I do.”

Discussing the first time offering, Dawn Dankner Rosen, who heads the Chamber, said she “thought it would be fun to have an event where you can meet up with experts in different fields for no fee, and ask them anything that comes to mind.” She said the board aimed to feature a “cross section” of owners and is considering regular “Ask me Anything” gatherings. — Grace Bennett

Northwell Health shot “Happy Birthday,” a touching, first-of-its-kind ad featuring emotional footage of a mother and baby meeting for the first time. The tender moments were captured in real time and inserted into the TV ad and broadcast within seven hours of the birth. The ad debuted on January 1st, 2016 on New York area broadcast stations including: WABC, WNBC, WCBS, and WPIX. A print version of the ad is running this week in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Newsday, The Journal News and The Staten Island Advance as part of Northwell Health’s robust 360-degree rebranding and marketing campaign entitled “Look North.”

“There’s no better way to symbolize Northwell Health’s new beginning than to highlight the first of more than 40,000 babies who will be delivered at Northwell Health hospitals in the coming year,” said Northwell Health President and Chief Executive Officer Michael Dowling. Northwell hospitals account for 17 percent of all births in New York State and 1 percent nationwide, far surpassing any other New York area health system.

Created with advertising agency J. Walter Thompson New York, the campaign is designed to introduce Northwell’s new name, logo, website, tagline and philosophy to consumers while providing a look at its pioneering vision for medical technology and the future. “Look North” is Northwell’s first brand campaign and the biggest marketing push in its history.

“As the largest healthcare provider in New York State, we are pursuing new and different ways of telling our story of innovation, providing consumers with a glimpse into the advanced care and individual attention that our patients receive from our more than 61,000 employees,” Mr. Dowling said.

The campaign will also include a digital and social media initiative directing viewers to the new Northwell “Look North” hub page (www.Northwell.edu/looknorth), giving them the opportunity to learn more about the campaign and explore baby-related content and other health news. Future elements of the campaign will launch on January 18.
