New Castle Historical Society to Host Sept. 19 Garden Party Fundraiser

August 19, 2015 by Inside Press

For release from The New Castle Historical Society:

The New Castle Historical Society is hosting its first annual “An Evening in Greeley’s Garden” event at the Horace Greeley House Museum on Saturday, September 19, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The evening will include live music performed by a Civil War Era string band, beer and wine, hors d’oeuvres, and a silent auction. The New Castle Historical Society’s Board of Trustees and volunteers, Westchester based artist Cindy Sacks, Kramer Portraits, and Hilltop Wines have each generously provided silent auction items for the event. General admission tickets for the “An Evening in Greeley’s Garden” begin at $65 and may be purchased by visiting www.newcastlehs.org or by calling 914-238-4666.

“The New Castle Historical Society is extremely excited to offer this first time special event at the Greeley House,” said Cassie Ward, Executive Director of the New Castle Historical Society. “The Garden Party is an opportunity for local residents and their guests to experience our museum and grounds in a new and unique way. The Garden Party will provide guests with the chance to experience the museum’s outdoor space similar to the way Horace Greeley did in the mid-1800s when he established his country home and farm in what is now downtown Chappaqua.”

All proceeds from this event will benefit the New Castle Historical Society, a nonprofit educational organization that seeks to discover, preserve, and share knowledge about the history of the Town of New Castle and about the life of Horace Greeley. Established in 1966, the Historical Society maintains a historic collection of artifacts and documents related to the Town of New Castle, it provides programs and exhibits about the Town’s history, and it preserves Horace Greeley’s second home in Chappaqua. The Historical Society will turn 50 next year and will continue to offer expanded programming and activities to encourage a greater interaction with the history and culture of the local area.

In addition to the “An Evening in Greeley’s Garden,” the Historical Society will host an array of new programs this fall. Some of the new programs include:

– A printing press education program for children under 10 (9/27/15),
– A purse party fundraiser for locals that love their accessories (10/17/15),
– An oral history program at the Chappaqua Library where residents will be encouraged to share their stories from the 1960s (10/7/15),
– A 50th Anniversary Kick-Off Party and Last Man Standing Cash Raffle (11/14/15),
– And a “Gold in Your Attic” Pop-Up Store at the Greeley House, just in time for the holidays (12/5/15).

For more information regarding these programs, please visit www.newcastlehs.org, call 914-238-4666, or email Cassie Ward at director@newcastlehs.org.

The New Castle Historical Society is a non-profit organization that discovers,
collects, preserves and communicates the history of the Town of New Castle.

Rabbi Jonathan Jaffe to Participate in America’s Journey for Justice

August 10, 2015 by Inside Press

A coalition of organizations, led by the NAACP, left Selma, Alabama on Saturday, August 1 beginning an 860-mile, 46-day march for freedom to Washington, D.C.

Called America’s Journey for Justice the march begins with a prayer before crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma on the trek to the nation’s capitol. The organizers expect thousands of people to join the marchers at every stop, with a core group of more than 100 to make the entire trek.RabbiJaffeheadshot (2)

On Thursday, August 27, Rabbi Jonathan Jaffe, Senior Rabbi at Temple Beth El of Northern Westchester, will be joining the Journey for Justice in Columbia, South Carolina, for a one day march.

The Journey for Justice, organized by the NAACP, is both a memorial to the Selma march that took place 50 years ago and a statement about voting rights and the criminal justice system. Each evening there will be a rally and interfaith teaching service.

Rabbi Jaffe is marching with more than 150 other Reform Rabbis from around the country over the course of 46 days. He welcomes other clergy and congregants from Chappaqua to join him for this historic occasion.

Home, Sweet Home

August 5, 2015 by The Inside Press

Publisher and Editor Grace BennettI write this on a toasty summer’s day, having just left a fundraiser for Swim Across America, reminded of how fortunate I am to be a member of such a compassionate community with wonderful resources too, including four beautiful pool clubs!* The opportunities for fun and friendship here are nothing short of phenomenal, so producing Inside my New Castle has turned into a special source of pride for me. I launched Inside Chappaqua in 2003 to regularly cover area stories butUntitled-1 it was in the spirit of producing something “comprehensive” that I proposed an all-encompassing guide to Town Hall. To my delight, the town board green lighted this most unique collaboration. Our area’s rich array of quality cultural, commercial, civic and nature offerings, its proximity to the city, the safety and security I feel, my professional role in the community–and most of all, the friends I have made and family memories I cherish–make it home, sweet home for me. I also care very much about your opinion about this guide and how to keep making it better. Write to me anytime at editor@insidechappaqua.com

Editor’s Note: Post guide, by special request: A separate link coming soon highlighting all of our beautiful pool clubs.

  • Neighborhoods, be they east or west, north or south, that have their own unique characteristics that contribute to a sense of a single, welcoming community.
  • World class schools that offer all students opportunities to study, grow and achieve.
  • Business districts that provide great shopping, dining and services for the pleasure and convenience of all who live and visit here.
  • We have public outdoor spaces that offer passive and active recreation and Community activities in the arts and education. Whether you are looking for youth sports, adult leagues and physical activity, just a wooded stroll with Map Approvedyour dog, the chance to look at artwork or listen to music, this Guide lets you know about how to take advantage of the many outlets for your physical well-being and inner-self!
  • Community-centered and volunteer organizations that attend to the health, spiritual, safety and social needs of our residents while preserving our rich history.

Of course, you’ll find information about our Town government. New Castle has a wonderful history of being a pleasant escape from the hustle and bustle of New York City. Yet, we are also less than an hour away by car or Metro-North Railroad.

Your elected officials and Town employees serve to support the Community. Read about our daily commitment and initiatives that continuously care for the safety of our residents, adults, children and pets.

Find out about our Town resources that demonstrate our efforts to be accessible, including the New Castle eNewsletter, our Town website recently redesigned that allows residents to pay taxes on-line, provides emergency information, an Event Calendar, Report a Problem or even contact a town employee or Board Member.

Please use this Guide to learn about our Community! Once again, Welcome!

All Aboard

Many of us came here to escape the city but we also wanted a reasonable proximity to it! In addition to our wonderful schools and so many other amenities, a major reason many families choose to call New Castle home is the ease of the commute. With so many of us working midtown and on Wall Street, it’s a boon that New Castle makes parking spots available to any resident who needs one. In addition, Metro North service to and from the Chappaqua Station is about as easy as anyone can expect for a northern Westchester suburb.

My husband and I had been house-hunting all over Westchester County, without great success, when our broker suggested New Castle. That night, as I drove on South Greeley Avenue, the sun was starting to set, and I saw a lighted field with kids playing baseball and parents cheering. There were people sitting in the gazebo. On my right, I saw a beautiful library and a magnificent school that I later learned was the Bell Middle School. I drove through the downtown and fell in love the town’s quaintness, charm and small-town feel. I knew that this was the town I wanted to live in and raise my family. My husband and I moved to New Castle 21 years ago and raised our two children, Jonathan and Beth, with the help of our beloved dog Champ.” ekmottel@mynewcastle.org
