HYDE PARK, NY (September 18, 2019) – Paying tribute to the legacy of “The First Lady of the World,” The Eleanor Roosevelt Center at Val-Kill (ERVK), a non-profit educational organization based in Hyde Park, NY, is excited to announce that it will honor five change-makers, including author and vice chair of the Clinton Foundation, Chelsea Clinton, and humanitarian, author and global journalist, Zainab Salbi, with the prestigious Eleanor Roosevelt Val-Kill Medal at a ceremonious luncheon on Sunday, October 13.Medals will be bestowed by honoree-selected presenters, including 1995 medal recipient, Hillary Clinton, honoring her daughter, Chelsea Clinton. The ceremony will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site in Hyde Park, NY. In its 32nd year, the Annual Eleanor Roosevelt Val-Kill Medal Ceremony recognizes individuals who reflect Mrs. Roosevelt’s desire to build a better world through humanitarian efforts. In addition to Clinton and Salbi, the 2019 honorees include Hyde Park residents and philanthropists, John and Gloria Golden, and President and CEO of Celebrity Cruises and gender equity champion, Lisa Lutoff-Perlo. Each of these distinguished guests will be presented with awards for their unfailing dedication to promoting human rights and to challenging injustice.

“Dedicated to serving others, these inspiring honorees have made an irrevocable impact on the global community,” said April Gozza, executive director of ERVK. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to honor and celebrate their contributions, which put into action Eleanor’s ideals. This year is especially momentous as it marks the first time both a mother and daughter have received the medal.”

In the tradition established by Mrs. Roosevelt’s life’s work, each medalist has made significant contributions to evolve social justice, education, public service and human rights. Embodying what it means to live through activism, advocacy and compassion, medalists serve to better their local communities and the world at large. Former honorees include Gloria Steinem, Her Majesty Queen Noor of Jordan, Hillary Clinton, James Earl Jones, Loung Ung, Pete Seeger, Peter and Jennifer Buffett, Pumla Gobodo-Madikezeka, Richard Holbrooke, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and Tarana Burke.

Proceeds will support the ERVK’s efforts to educate, inspire and uplift future generations through leadership and youth development programs, including the esteemed Girls Leadership Worldwide program and the Eleanor Roosevelt Emerging Community College Leaders (ECCEL) program for community college students. Chappaqua Resident Stacey Saiontz to be Honored at a U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum Benefit

NEW YORK, NY. (August 29, 2019) – The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum has announced that Stacey Saiontz of Chappaqua will be honored with the National Leadership Award at the 2019 “What You Do Matters” New York Tribute Dinner on Monday, October 28, 2019 at Cipriani 42nd Street.

Against the backdrop of the global rise in antisemitism, more than 450 guests are expected to attend this meaningful event to reaffirm their active commitment and support the Museum’s national campaign, Never Again: What You Do Matters, which will ensure that the Museum can make the critical investments to keep Holocaust memory alive as a relevant, transformative force in the 21st century.

Stacey Saiontz’s paternal grandparents survived the Holocaust, but it wasn’t until she started asking questions at an early age that her grandfather, Jack Feldman, began to share his story, including the time he spent in the Auschwitz concentration camp.  Over the years, Stacey filmed her grandfather’s memories from the Holocaust, capturing incredible details and intimate insight into the tragedies that he endured.

Stacey’s personal pursuit to preserve the evidence of the Holocaust extended beyond her family’s story. When Stacey married her husband Marc, they chose to make a donation to support the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Soon after in 2004, Stacey became one of the pioneering founders of the Museum’s New York Next Generation Board.

“Stacey Saiontz has emerged as one of our most dedicated young leaders, driven by her passion for preserving Holocaust history and promoting Holocaust education for future generations,” said Sindy Lugerner, Assistant Director, Development and Operations, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. “We are proud to honor Stacey with the National Museum Leadership Award as an inspiring leader in our community who exemplifies the importance of passing the torch of Holocaust remembrance to the next generation.”

In 2018, HBO released a documentary inspired by the special relationship between Stacey’s grandfather, Jack, and her sons, Elliott and Jared.  The documentary, “The Number on Great Grandpa’s Arm,” is now used as a powerful educational tool to teach young audiences and people of all ages about the critical lessons of the Holocaust.

“During the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum’s 20th anniversary, my grandfather walked our son Elliott through the children’s exhibition, Daniel’s Story, and was able to share pieces of his personal story as it related to Daniel’s story with him,” says Stacey Saiontz. “This past April, we visited the Museum during the annual Days of Remembrance and my grandfather, now 93, was able to walk our younger son, Jared, through the same exhibition and share this unique experience with him, too.”

“The Museum serves as a moral compass, and is one of the most important institutions that we have, especially today as the number of survivors is dwindling,” continued Stacey. “I want my grandfather and all survivors to feel confident that the next generation will never let their stories fade, and that the Museum will continue to educate the world to ensure that this never happens again.  I feel so grateful that the Museum is honoring me and lucky that my grandfather is still here to witness it.”

Beyond serving as a founding member of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum’s New York Next Generation Board, Stacey has remained dedicated to Holocaust education causes throughout her life in leadership roles at the Auschwitz Jewish Center Foundation, the Museum of Jewish Heritage, and the Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center.

At the New York Tribute Dinner chaired by Debrah Lee Charatan, Jeffrey Feil, Lloyd Goldman, Mindy Nagorsky-Israel and Ronen Israel, and Caryn and Howard Unger, all guests will receive free copies of the HBO documentary about Stacey’s family.  In addition, Gary Jacob will also be honored at the Dinner with the National Leadership Award for his dedicated leadership in the Museum’s Northeast community.

Sunday, November 3rd, Film Screening: “All Things Bakelite: The Age of Plastic”

On November 3rd, 2019, the Bedford Playhouse Theater, in collaboration with the New Castle, Bedford, and Mount Kisco Historical Societies, will show the award-winning 2018 documentary “All Things Bakelite: The Age of Plastic.” Following the screening, Executive Producer, Hugh Karraker, will discuss the making of the film and answer questions.

This joyous and provocative film tells the story of Belgian-born American chemist Leo Hendrik Baekeland, the “father of modern plastics.” In 1907, he made one of the most transformative discoveries of the 20th century in his Yonkers-based lab: Bakelite, the world’s first wholly synthetic plastic.

While 2019 marks the 110th anniversary year of the Bakelite patent, the influence of Baekeland’s discovery can still be observed in our daily lives. The film captures both the wonder and the curse of Baekeland’s biggest invention and its impact on our lives today.

Monday, November 11th, Meet our Local Veterans

On November 11, 2019, the New Castle Historical Society will host a “Meet our Local Veterans” program at the Millwood Fire House.

2019 marks the 100th anniversary of the first celebration of Armistice (Veterans) Day. During the interval of interwar peace between WWI and WWII, “Armistice Day” was declared a federal holiday to commemorate the official end of WWI on November 11th, 1918. American society is currently more socially disconnected to the military than at any time since that interval between the two world wars.

Although we now celebrate Veterans Day each November, American society lacks an understanding of veterans and their experiences, causing veterans to be viewed in the abstract rather than as the community members that they are.

Veterans Day honors the courage and sacrifice of all the men and women who honorably served in the military during times of war or peace. This day is a special reminder to show our appreciation of these brave members of our community.

During this public program, local veterans will share their stories in a space in which they can be heard by our local community. This public program encourages our local community to gain a better understanding of the experiences of the veterans in our community. Following the stories, a brief reception will be held to allow veterans and audience members to meet and further discuss their experiences.

Northern Westchester Hospital Earns Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation

MOUNT KISCO, NY – In recognition of excellence in care for older patients, Northern Westchester Hospital (NWH) was among Northwell Health’s 17 emergency departments across Long Island, New York City and Westchester to receive recognition from the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) for its expertise in caring for geriatric patients. Northwell is the first health system in the nation to have every ED in its network accredited.

“This achievement was made possible by the close collaboration between our emergency department teams, and geriatric and palliative care clinicians to deliver high-quality care to older adults who need a tailored approach to meet their needs during an ED visit,” said James Dwyer, MD, chief of Emergency Services at NWH. “Seniors who arrive in the emergency department need extra support and our staff recognizes it can be a challenge to navigate a complex medical system. I’m extremely proud of the teamwork demonstrated by our remarkable interdisciplinary team, and their energy and commitment in enhancing care for seniors during some of their most vulnerable times.”

The voluntary geriatric accreditation provides specific criteria and goals for emergency clinicians and administrators. The accreditation recommends more than two dozen best practices for geriatric care.  NWH was awarded a level 3 accreditation, which requires many of these best practices and geriatric education for emergency medicine staff, as well as screenings and programs focused on older adults.  Those include: geriatric-friendly equipment availability and policies regarding routine assessments for delirium, dementia or fall risk.

New York State is home to the third-largest elderly population in the country, according to the New York Academy of Medicine. Over the next decade, adults 65 years and older are expected to grow to 20 percent of the US population. Across Northwell Health, emergency departments report over 800,000 visits annually, of which nearly 30 percent of patients are 65 years and older.
