Smart Strategies for a Spring Shape Up

March 5, 2013 by The Inside Press

scott and grace
Scott Reilly, owner, and Derek Alberto, trainer, with Grace. They are helping her meet her fitness goals.

With Spring break right around the corner( even though the ground is still covered with snow), clients are beginning to ask me how to lose those winter pounds and get in shape for the spring. Whether it’s fitting into that bathing suit for April vacation, or getting ready for spring tennis,  both goals and mindset need to shift to achieve our personal best. As a trainer in Chappaqua for the last 17 years, Prescriptions for Fitness has been able to help our clients to not “panic” about the up and coming spring or summer vacation. We design  a realistic plan to achieve these goals. Below are some of the most effective tips to help you get in the best shape of your life.

First and foremost, many people must change their overall eating and exercising habits. It doesn’t have to take over your life, you just need to make smart choices.

10. Eat smaller, more frequent meals. Many people think by skipping breakfast, or by starving themselves, they will lose weight, when in fact by doing this, they will actually gain weight. Smaller meals speed up your metabolism, and create the proper environment for your body to use excess fat as fuel for your workouts.

9. Drink more water, and use nutritional supplements wisely. In order for your body to digest food correctly; it needs water to accomplish this. Water will also keep you full and curb some of your cravings. While you reduce calories, your body absolutely needs proper nutrients to preserve your muscle tissue and burn fat. This is where proper vitamins, and essential oils come into play.

8. Check our supplement recommender. Go to www.prescriptionsforfitness.net: under “Nutrition,” you will find the best ways to burn  fat fast and reach your goals.

gym7.  Increase your weight training and circuit training. The only place in your body that body fat is actually burned is inside your muscle tissue. If you just do cardio, you body will burn muscle for energy. When you lose muscle, you lose the ability to burn body fat. This is a fact, not a myth. Contrary to what many women think, weight training will not bulk them up. It will lean them out–and sculpt the bodies they want.

6. Consult your personal trainer to design a safe and effective weight training program for you.

5. Exercise for at least 25-35 minutes within 80-90% of your target heart rate. This creates what’s called EPOC, or excess post oxygen consumption. High intensity workouts will not only burn more calories during your workout, but will burn additional calories during your recovery period as well.

Higher intensity=larger oxygen deficit /longer recovery=more post workout calories burned.  A high intensity weight/cardio workout will continue to burn calories for the next 24 to 36 hours after you have finished working out. The more calories we burn the faster we reach our goals.

4. Set goals. If you have a goal of losing 15 pounds, break it down into five and three pound goals. This way it will not seem so overwhelming. If you fall off the wagon, brush it off and get back to focusing on your goal. Always stay positive and move in the right direction.

3.  Lift weights that are heavier than your purse if you want to change your body. Lifting two-pound weights for 300 reps is more of a cardio workout–not a strength workout.  Stop listening to celebrity trainers who tout the two-pound/many reps solution to their celebrity clients. You don’t have a private chef to prepare all your meals or  a stress-free lifestyle. Scientific studies have proven lifting heavier weights with fewer reps will help you reach your goals in the shortest time possible.

2.  On your cardio-only days, increase your sprint intervals. Science has proven that slow and long cardio, is not nearly effective as high intensity interval cardio. Many people may not like this because it is challenging, but so is trying to lose weight.

1. Leave your comfort zone. Sometimes we have to work hard if we want to accomplish our fitness goals. If you keep doing what you have been doing for years, don’t expect to see results if you don’t change it up.

These ten tips may not be the easiest changes to your workouts, but they will definitely be the most effective. Everything in life that we want to achieve takes work. Good luck. Make sure you work with your personal trainer when implementing these changes. This way you will educate yourself as well on how to make life long changes to your fitness program.

Savvy Ways to Make Your Eyebrows Glamorous!

March 5, 2013 by The Inside Press

ivanaBy Ivana Denniston

10. Make them longer. Extend to the end of your brow bone.  It will bring out the cheekbones.

9. Set them closer. This narrows the nose and make your eyes “pop”

8. Less is more. Follow your natural brow bone arch and tweeze them into a gentle curve more “in sync” with your facial expressions.

7. Work with what you have. Fill them in with the powder pencil if they did not grow in the way you wanted.

6. Groom your brows but be conservative. Trimming individual hairs will make eyebrows neat.

5. Choose the right color. Opt for a shade lighter than your natural brows so they look full, but not too heavy.

4. Tweeze once every three weeks.  Don’t fuss too often; brows actually do grow when maybe you thought they wouldn’t.

3. Use natural light when tweezing. Avoid magnifying and you will gain better perspective.

2. Trim, don’t pull the crazy little hairs at the beginning of your brow.  They’re a precious part of your brow and will give you a more glam and natural look.

1. Try not to make them too perfect. Removing too much makes them too tiny.

Dedicated to the art of eyebrows, Aesthetician Ivana Denniston has the unique ability to envision and sculpt brows in an artistic way that contours and highlights the best characteristics of the face.

Top Ten Reasons I Love Writing for Inside Chappaqua

By Maggie Mae…with Ronni Diamondstein

In honor of the 10th anniversary of Inside Chappaqua, I want to share the top ten reasons I’m proud to write for the magazine.

10. It gets my owner out of the house: Not only does she walk me all the time, but she gets to come along with me on my interviews, take pictures–which she loves to do–and she meets the interesting folks I write about.

9. I get to showcase important causes:  I was proud to interview rescue dogs and the staff at the SPCA of Westchester in Briarcliff.  I hope to do more stories like this in the future.

8. I’ve learned a lot and shared what I have learned: Why it’s great for kids to have a pet and how it’s good for people of all ages to own a dog. And one of my favorite columns was why I am a child at heart and always will be.

7. I can help other pets and their owners: My friend Biscuit’s owner Gary told me that he didn’t realize dogs needed to be licensed in the state of New York and our town until he read my first column “Why I Wear My Dog Tag Proudly” in May 2010. And I’ve shared a lot of other important       information on pet health, dog safety in the winter and being careful about coyotes. From the foods that are toxic for dogs to having a whistle to scare off a coyote, I am happy to pass along what I have learned.

6. I can have fun. I met my friend Rocky at Gedney Park for my story on dog parks. And it was an honor to be asked to be a celebrity dog judge at Temple Beth El of Northern Westchester’s first Dog Social last spring.

5. I get my picture taken. I’ve been in front of a camera since I was a puppy so I love when people want to pose with me!

4. I am recognized wherever I go. One day my owner was surprised when someone she didn’t know said hello to me on one of our walks into town. The woman explained that she recognized me from my picture in Inside Chappaqua magazine. I am always very happy to meet my readers!

3. I go interesting places and meet very nice people. I wrote about pet friendly lodgings and toured Crabtree’s Kittle House and Inn with John Crabtree, one of the original owners. I was so happy to visit author and animal lover, Jean Craighead George at her home and talk to her about her book, How to Talk to Your Dog. And I’ve been to Town Hall to talk to New Castle Animal Control Officer James Moore and Town Clerk Jill Simon Shapiro.

2. I’ve met some very intriguing animals. I loved meeting Ronnie, a rescue dog at the SPCA and was happy to hear he was adopted after my visit. One of my favorite and scariest interviews was at Dr. Laurie Hess’s Veterinary Center for Birds & Exotic Pets. I loved meeting Dr. Hess and I was very brave to have my picture taken with her parrot Target whose beak got a little too close to me!

1. And the number one reason is Grace Bennett.  In this “dog eat dog” world (I can’t believe I really wrote that!), Grace had the vision and imagination to give me, Maggie Mae Pup Reporter, and my owner this amazing opportunity to have a voice.  Thank you, Grace! Congratulations! Here’s to another ten years!

StyleCycle’s Top 10 Styling Tips

March 5, 2013 by The Inside Press

style cycle
Susan (left) and Lisa

10. Edit your closet. You should be able to see all items in your closet and not be overwhelmed by them. Part with items you have not worn in the last two seasons.

9. Remember: Proportions are important. Pair a skinny jean or legging with a bulky sweater or swingy blouse. Try a wide or straight-legged pant with a sleeker top. One look we love: a cropped straight black pant with a bulky sweater!

8. Show skin strategically. Choose only one body part to show off. If it’s cleavage, emphasize that but don’t show too much leg and visa versa.

7. Invest in a few high quality pieces. We would like to see our clients buy less but a little higher quality.  A good shoe, bag or blazer can really make a gap t-shirt look fabulous!

6. Add a pop of color. If your wardrobe consists primarily of neutrals, add energy with a boldly colored shoe, bag or scarf. To make a statement, wear a jewel-toned blouse or tank as your first layer and let it peek out at the neck, sleeve, or bottom.

5. Hem height is crucial. To elongate your legs, keep wide-bottom pants just grazing the floor; that means you must commit to heel height. (Suggestion: if you find a pair of jeans that you absolutely love, buy two pairs: one to wear with flats and one to wear with heels). Always bring the shoe you will wear with you when hemming pants. Cropped pants are hot this season and they should fit right above the ankle to show off the skinniest part of the leg.

4. Embrace your shape. Know what styles work for you and stick with them. That means you must filter trends very carefully. Skinny jeans are not for everyone. Please don’t fight your body.

3. Layer, layer, layer. Start with a silk blouse or camisole, add a thin sweater, throw on a blazer and don’t forget the scarf. A stack of bracelets or layering necklaces makes a statement a la Coco Chanel.

2. Don’t fall into the sale trap. A bargain is only a bargain if you absolutely love it. Inexpensive mistakes can add up not to mention take up space in your closet.

1. Play with texture. Texture makes it’s mark in the form of chunky knits, leather and fur, velvet, lace, and embroidery. Have fun with it, but don’t overdo it.

StyleCycle, a personalized styling service founded by Susan Goodman and Lisa Ballou, is dedicated to helping working women create an effortless wardrobe by editing and restyling what’s already in their closet.
