Westchester County Employees Hold Donation Drive for Bronx Families Impacted by Fire

January 13, 2022 by The Inside Press

Donations Encouraged at County Office Building

Westchester County Executive George Latimer is commending County employees for coming together to donate what they can to help Bronx families impacted by Sunday’s devastating and deadly fire that claimed the lives of 17 people, including 8 children.

Latimer said: “We are grieving with our brothers and sisters in the Bronx. For years Westchester has had a strong connection to the Bronx and that link is undeniable. It is our duty to give back and help our neighbors who have lost so much. We want to help them heal, rebuild and let them know we are here for them. Our hearts are with the survivors and the families left behind as we share in this loss.”

Assistant County Attorney Irma Cosgriff approached the County Executive about setting up a donation drive to help the families after hearing of the tragedy.

Cosgriff said: “I had an overwhelming sense of sadness for the individuals and families affected by this tragedy and wanted to do something to help. We want to provide an easy and trusted way for County employees’ donations to be most effective. This is about us doing something.”

A donation box at Michaelian Office Building at 148 Martine Avenue in White Plains has been set up to receive donations beginning Friday, January 14 through January 21. Employees are asked to place their donations in large transportable plastic bags. The items will be donated to PS-85 Great Expectations School, where many of the children impacted by this fire, attended.

Essential items needed include: bottled water, pillows, blankets, non-perishable food, sanitizer, toiletries, feminine hygiene products, pet products, new and unworn clothing (sweatpants, sweatshirts, undershirts, socks, kids and     adult-sized underwear, kids and adult-sized pajamas), diapers and baby items and unused bedding.

County residents are encouraged to assist where they can. Monetary donations can be made via the links provided below:

Northern Westchester Hospital Awarded Certification in Spine Surgery from The Joint Commission

December 23, 2021 by The Inside Press

Mount Kisco, NY – Northern Westchester Hospital has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Disease-Specific Care Certification in Spine Surgery by demonstrating continuous compliance with The Joint Commission’s performance standards. The Gold Seal is a symbol of quality that reflects a health care organization’s commitment to providing safe and quality patient care.

The certification recognizes health care organizations that provide clinical programs across the continuum of care for Spine Surgery. The certification evaluates how organizations use clinical outcomes and performance measures to identify opportunities to improve care, as well as to educate and prepare patients and their caregivers for discharge.

Northern Westchester Hospital underwent a rigorous, onsite survey during which the team of Joint Commission reviewers evaluated compliance with related certification standards, including: effective use of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines through the continuum of care, organized approach to performance measurement and improvement activities, as well as delivering and facilitating clinical care in compliance with national standards. Joint Commission standards are developed in consultation with health care experts and providers, measurement experts and patients. The reviewers also conducted onsite observations and interviews.

“Disease-Specific Care Certification in Spine Surgery recognizes health care organizations committed to fostering continuous quality improvement in patient safety and quality of care,” says Mark Pelletier, RN, MS, chief operating officer, Accreditation and Certification Operations, and chief nursing executive, The Joint Commission. “We commend Northern Westchester Hospital for using certification to reduce variation in its clinical processes and to strengthen its program structure and management framework for Spine Surgery patients.”

Dr. Marshal Peris, co-director of the Orthopedic and Spine Institute at Northern Westchester Hospital added, “We are proud of this achievement and will continue to hold our spine program to the rigorous standards of the Joint Commission, as part of our ongoing commitment to provide the highest level of patient centered care. We are particularly proud to be one of only three hospitals in New York State that are Certified in Spine Surgery.” The other certified hospitals are fellow Northwell Health facilities, North Shore University Hospital and South Shore University Hospital.

For more information on the Joint Commission Spine Certification, please visit The Joint Commission website.

Winter Surge of Omicron Variant Prompts Over 40 Additional Statewide Pop Up Vaccination Sites

December 18, 2021 by The Inside Press

List of More than 40 Pop Up Vaccination Sites

Governor Kathy Hochul announced the deployment of more than 40 new Pop-Up vaccination sites across New York State to fight the winter surge and rapidly spreading Omicron variant.

These sites will begin to launch today and are part of a multi-week effort, in partnership with local county health departments and community partners, to build on the State’s extensive outreach efforts to get all New Yorkers fully vaccinated and boosted.

“The winter surge is in full force, but we are not defenseless. We have the tools to fight this virus and its variants: Get vaccinated, get the booster and wear a mask,” Governor Kathy Hochul said. “We will continue working with local partners to make vaccines, boosters and testing widely available as soon possible so that all New Yorkers can protect themselves and their loved ones.”

“I am urging everyone to get fully vaccinated and boosted now, ahead of the holidays, as it is our best defense against the virus and its variants,” said Acting Health Commissioner Dr. Mary T. Bassett. “By making a plan to visit one of these Pop-Ups that is convenient for you and your family, you are helping to keep your family and all New Yorkers safe. Remember, we should all prepare for the holidays by doing everything we can to keep the most vulnerable in our families and communities safe.”
