In Memoriam: Donald Michael Lunetta, Sr., January 10, 1940-July 15, 2016

July 22, 2016 by Inside Press

“Thou canst not stir a flower, without troubling of a star.” ~ Francis Thompson

From the family of Donald Michael Lunetta, Sr.:

With full hearts, we share the news of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend Donald Michael Lunetta, Sr.’s death on Friday, July 15, 2016. Don died at home surrounded by his loving family. We are grateful that his struggle with brain cancer has ended and that he is now at peace.

Donald Michael Lunetta, Sr.
Donald Michael Lunetta, Sr.

Born in 1940 to Samuel and Esther (Nieri) Lunetta, Don was raised in Sacramento, California, a proud son of Sicilian descent. His youth proved to nurture some of the character traits that stayed strong throughout his life: affinity to music, curiosity, science, nature, invention, and humor. He met the love of his life, Loretta-Jo (Abbott) Lunetta in 1951 while they were both active volunteers at the Sacramento Junior Museum, and after years of friendship blossoming into romance, they were married in 1960.

With the wedding guests waving farewell, Don and Jo headed for Colorado, where they built a home and brought five children into the world. Don worked at the Denver Museum of Natural History as the curator of the Planetarium. During his tenure at the museum, he designed several pioneering technologies for planetariums, including the first tilting dome and the first telescope/television projection system. Don’s systems were used by NASA and national news media to show the progress of the Apollo 10. The museum was also the perfect environment for Don to cultivate his natural teaching style, a talent he shared with everyone around him his entire life. In addition, Don was honored to be part of the discovery and first known documentation of nesting Goshawks in Colorado, with his photographs and story included in The Colorado Book of Birds. Don remains known at the museum for his sense of humor, wonder and aptitude for education and community outreach and was featured in their recent 50-year retrospective of the museum.

Hired by McGraw Hill in 1969, Don brought his family to New York, where he consulted on space and planetarium projects throughout the 1970’s. He appeared on a variety of TV and Radio Shows and was a featured speaker for many organizations, spreading his love of space and the natural world. He designed and directed the installation of planetarium domes and telescopes at Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua, NY, and at Camp Kaybeyun in Alton Bay, NH.

Don owned and operated his own business, Small Moon Enterprises, an international multimedia production company. Responsible for all aspects of production, he created multimedia interpretive exhibits for museums and special projects including work on the Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum, the Franklin Park Zoo in Boston, the Charlotte Science Museum, the Amarillo Texas Science Center, Roanoke Science Museum, West Virginia’s Oglebay Park, the US Navy Band, Covenant House, and the Louisiana World Fair and Smithsonian Folk Life Festival. In 1979, the Governor of the State of Louisiana named Don as an honorary colonel of the governor’s staff, in recognition of the tremendous work Don did to promote the heritage of the State of Louisiana. Don photographically documented the development of the plans and eventual refurbishment of the Statue of Liberty in 1984. He was a pioneer in multimedia production and interactive communications and marketing, starting with his creation of a panoramic five camera system in 1975 and following through to water screens and interactive touch screens in the early 1990’s.

A lifelong independent learner, fascinated and competent with technology and human connection, Don learned computer language and programming from his home office as the digital age unfolded. He dedicated the final years of his career as a photographer and IT Specialist, first for Holmes and Kennedy Real Estate, and then for Douglas Elliman Real Estate. He was recognized by his peers as a tremendous team player, and in February of 2016 was honored with a Lifetime Achievement award by Douglas Elliman, which he accepted with grace and dignity on the stage of Radio City Music Hall.

Don was always inclined to create positive change, to participate in small heroic acts and to share the stories of those who were quiet heroes. Countless people, young and old, recount meeting Don on the boardwalk at the Pinecliff Sanctuary to discover the beauty and fascination of the natural world, always sharing a laugh or a story. Don treasured his many trips to the inland waterways of the United Kingdom, meandering by narrowboat through England and Wales almost biannually for two decades. Always seeking adventure, Don is fondly remembered as the oldest Grandpa to ever strap himself into the zip-line at Green Mountain College in Vermont.

Community engagement has always motivated Don, he served his country as an airborne radio operator in the United States Air Force and Air Force Reserves. He served as a member of the Saw Mill River Audubon board of directors and was instrumental in the planning, building and ongoing support for an ADA accessible boardwalk through the Pinecliff Sanctuary. Don and Jo were recently honored with the installment of a plaque on the boardwalk, honoring their nearly 50 years of stewardship for the reserve. He also served as an active member of the New Castle Citizen Emergency Response (CERT) Team, the Chappaqua Rotary and was always prepared for random acts of kindness.

Don was most proud of his family. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle. Upon learning of Don’s death, his family received this kind message from someone who recalled growing up with Don as his neighbor: “It’s hard to fathom how many lives he changed for the better. I know it’s in the thousands and I would not be surprised if it’s in the tens of thousands… Anyone, everyone… always a kind word and an explanation for some aspect of nature, some fact of art or photography. Always with a wisecrack and a smile. Just a good man who made the world better.” We are thankful for this perceptive and comforting comment, as it captures the spirit of the man we cherish.

Don is survived by his devoted wife and partner of 56 years, Loretta-Jo Lunetta of Chappaqua NY; his brother Dennis and wife Hazel, sister-in-law Sharon Lunetta, his beloved children Roslyn Lunetta, Matthew Lunetta and wife Chenoa Dovon, Samuel Lunetta and wife Bonnie Bisgeier, Celeste Lunetta and husband Don Crooker, Donald Lunetta Jr., grandchildren Meiko Lunetta, Silas Lunetta, Evan Lunetta, Rosemary-Jo Lunetta Crooker; and several nieces, nephews and valued friends.

Service Information:

Please join us at a celebration of Don’s life, which will be held on Sunday, August 14 at Teatown Lake Reservation; 11:30 a.m.- 2 p.m. The service will be at Noon, with light fare and socializing afterwards.  Teatown Lake Reservation is located at 1600 Spring Valley Road, Ossining NY, 10562. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Don’s memory to the Chappaqua Library (195 South Greeley Avenue, Chappaqua NY, 10514), or to the Saw Mill River Audubon Pinecliff Sanctuary Boardwalk (275 Millwood Road, Chappaqua NY 10514).

Top 10 Reasons (+2) to Vote for Hillary

July 22, 2016 by Inside Press

By Ann Styles Brochstein and Cynthia Metcalf

So now that the GOP convention is over, we can focus on why America needs to elect Hillary Clinton for POTUS.  Here goes…we’ve compiled our Top 10 reasons (+2) to vote for Hillary:

hill and ann in h

  1. She’ll appoint Supreme Court justices who will keep the court from jumping off the right wing cliff.cynthia
  2. Utopia not Dystopia: Her vision for our country isn’t Mad Max based, like He Who Must Not Be Named.
  3. She’s not afraid to take on the NRA to enact sensible gun laws while preserving the 2d amendment just like our Founding Fathers intended.
  4. She will create jobs for the growing pantsuit manufacturing industry in the US!
  5. Governing with a vagina… yes she has one. Finally someone who knows what women’s issues are really all about–preserving and expanding women’s healthcare & reproductive rights.
  6. She will make college affordable for everyone!
  7. She will give EVERY child a chance to succeed with early childhood education programs
  8. It’s about time a man got a chance to become First Spouse!
  9. She’s sane and enormously respected around the world. Her foreign policy experience is second to none and what we need in an increasingly unstable and complicated world.
  10. She will help the US move away from a Red & Blue culture to one where “We are all in this together” #LoveAndKindness.
  11. Electing Hillary will give Chappaqua two Presidents to march in our Memorial Day Parade, something no other town in the U.S. can claim.
  12. Will change HIStory to HERstory! (Mic drop)

Okay, we couldn’t whittle the list down to just 10! There are even more reasons we wanted to add, like protecting the environment and insuring LGBTQ rights which are equally important. She’s obviously the smartest & most experienced candidate to run for POTUS in our lifetime, so let’s do the right thing and elect Hillary! Not voting is not an option!

Chappaqua’s own Cynthia Metcalf (bottom photo) & Ann Styles Brochstein have well over 3,000 twitter followers (from all over the world) for their frequently irreverent and witty tweets in support of their hometown candidate for POTUS.  Metcalf and Brochstein are also long time Chappaqua residents, 18 & 24 years respectively, and moms with six great kids between them. When they’re not tweeting & posting, Cynthia is a soccer mom of one and college-tuition paying mom to three & empty nester Ann is a doggie mom. You can follow them on Facebook at: Chappaqua & US 4 Hillary NOW, and on Twitter@Neighbors4Hill.

The Joy of Reading and Playing Music to Sunshine Kids

July 21, 2016 by Inside Press

Visiting the Scattered Books bookstore for a special “Reading with Rabbit Storytime” in downtown Chappaqua was the highlight this week for a group of children from the Sunshine Children’s Home–a full-time residential care facility for children with medically complex needs or life-threatening illnesses, located in the Town of New Castle and nearby Ossining.

SunshineScattered4

Simple pleasures that many kids take for granted — like visiting a book shop — can be harder to come by for the kids at Sunshine, many of whom have very limited mobility. Fortunately, a growing number of local businesses and charities in New Castle and Ossining are showing their commitment to finding creative ways to bring these enriching experiences to their most vulnerable young neighbors – the children at the Sunshine Children’s Home.

Says Jeannine Killenberger, a Putnam-Northern Westchester BOCES teacher at the Sunshine Children’s Home: “It’s so wonderful for the children to have these opportunities to be exposed to a new and different environment where they can feel like they’re part of a neighborhood and have a connection to their community (Town of New Castle).”

The Mike Risko Music School-Band also joins this growing number of local businesses and community members in New Castle and Ossining that have been showing their support, kindness and generosity to Sunshine. Nine very special preschool graduates enjoyed a very special performance this month when Ossining’s Mike Risko Band gave a live musical performance for their preschool graduation ceremony.

Sunshine2 (2)“When we realized that the Sunshine Children’s Home preschool graduation would fall on Make Music Day, which is a global celebration of music, we knew we had to do something really special,” says Miriam Risko. “While we had musicians doing pop-up concerts all over the community that day, I knew this was one performance I wanted to do myself. It was an honor for me and our band to be able to perform for these kids.”

Recently the trendy Chappaqua retailer Hip Kids Lounge held its first “Creative Kids’ Market” featuring the arts, crafts, jewelry created by local artists, which benefited the Sunshine Children’s Home aquatics program.

The Chappaqua Cares community group that supports a variety of charitable causes, planted flower boxes at the home last spring. And, many residents of the surrounding communities are active volunteers at Sunshine.

“We are so appreciative to be part of the warm, generous and supportive community of New Castle,” says Linda Mosiello, Sunshine Children’s Home administrator. “Many of the businesses here have been reaching out to us, and many residents of neighboring communities volunteer here.”

“It feels so good to all of us, especially to the children and staff, to be accepted as an integral part of this wonderful Westchester community of kind-hearted people,” she added.

The mission of the Sunshine Children’s Home and Rehab Center is to create a loving and supportive environment that provides the highest level of quality pediatric care for children who require post-acute medical care and/or rehabilitative therapy, combined with psychological and developmental interventions. Hillary Clinton Outlines False Claims at RNC

July 20, 2016 by Inside Press

From Hillary for America press:

Day two of the Republican Convention built on the litany of lies heard on day one and every day since the beginning of Donald Trump’s candidacy.  Once again, there were too many to count, but here are a sample of the falsehoods told from the podium:

  1. FALSE CLAIM: Donald Trump Jr.: “Mark [Geist] was one of the men who received frantic phone calls from his buddies at the compound [in Benghazi]. Calls that pleaded for help. Calls that he and his team tried to answer. But calls that didn’t save all his friends, because Secretary Clinton’s State Department had ignored their requests for help, both on the night in question and even in the weeks and months leading up to the attack.”

TRUTH: Washington Post: “[S]ecurity decisions were made well below Clinton’s level and no evidence has emerged that Clinton was aware of the requests or decided not to provide the requisite level of security.”

  1. FALSE CLAIM: Donald Trump Jr.: “Hillary Clinton is a risk Americans can’t afford to take. She said she’ll issue executive orders to take away Americans’ guns. She wants to appoint judges who will abolish the Second Amendment.”

TRUTH: PolitiFact: False. “We found no evidence of Clinton ever saying verbatim or suggesting explicitly that she wants to abolish the Second Amendment, and the bulk of Clinton’s comments suggest the opposite. She has repeatedly said she wants to protect the right to bear arms while enacting measures to prevent gun violence.”

  1. FALSE CLAIM: Donald Trump Jr.: “Rather than being energy independent, our country will be forced to remain beholden to her buddies in the Middle East.”

TRUTH: Hillary Clinton has released a comprehensive plan to invest in modernizing our energy infrastructure to make America the clean energy superpower of the 21st century and continue to reduce our reliance on foreign oil.

  1. FALSE CLAIM: Donald Trump Jr.: “A president who will repeal and replace Obamacare without leaving our most vulnerable citizens without health care and who will do it without destroying Medicare for seniors, as Hillary Clinton has proposed.”

TRUTH: Hillary Clinton fought throughout her career to protect Medicare and has released plans to preserve and strengthen Medicare as president. The idea that she has put forth proposals that would destroy Medicare is ludicrous.

  1. FALSE CLAIM: Gov. Chris Christie: “In Syria, imagine this, imagine this, she called President Assad a ‘reformer.’”

TRUTH: Washington Post’s Josh Rogin: “Christie is wrong. Hillary did not call Assad a reformer. She referred to that Kerry did. Facts are stubborn things.”

  1. FALSE CLAIM: Gov. Chris Christie: “In Nigeria, Hillary Clinton amazingly fought for two years to keep an Al-Qaeda affiliate off of the terrorist watch list…. These Al-Qaeda terrorists abducted hundreds of innocent young woman two years ago. These schoolgirls are still missing today. And what was the solution from the Obama/Clinton team? A hashtag campaign! Now let’s figure it out, let’s decide. Hillary Clinton, as an apologist for an Al-Qaeda affiliate in Nigeria resulting in the capture of innocent young women, is she guilty or not guilty?”

TRUTH: This attack is very wrong on many levels:

  • Hillary Clinton condemned the group’s unjustifiable use of violence in 2011 and worked to crack down on them as Secretary of State. She took the unprecedented step of designating their key leaders as terrorists.
  • Boko Haram is not an Al Qaeda affiliate. Al Qaeda’s affiliate that is active in Nigeria, AQIM, has been on the terror list since 2002.
  • Clinton’s State Department didn’t designate Boko Haram as a Foreign Terror Organization because experts, including George W. Bush’s ambassador to Nigeria, warned this would elevate the group and help them fundraise and recruit.
  • The appalling 2014 attack, which Clinton swiftly and aggressively condemned, took place several months after Secretary Kerry’s State Department designated Boko Haram as an FTO – sadly, it did nothing to prevent the attacks.

  1. FALSE CLAIM:  Gov. Chris Christie: “She said there was no marked classified information on her server. The FBI Director said that’s untrue.”

TRUTH: FactCheck.org: “[FBI Director Comey] said three emails had ‘portion markings’ on them indicating that they were classified, but they were not properly marked”

  1. FALSE CLAIM: GOP Co-Chairman Sharon Day: “She repeatedly plays the gender card. In fact, she boasts, ‘deal me in.’ Well, Mrs. Clinton, consider yourself dealt in. Because as a Senator, you paid women less than the men in your office.”

TRUTH: PolitiFact: Florida’s Sharon Day misleads on Hillary Clinton and gender pay gap: “The data show a median salary of $40,000 for both men and women receiving official Senate pay over those seven years (excluding Clinton’s pay, since all senators have the same salary set by law.) The median salary remains equal if you factor in non-Senate work, too.”

  1. FALSE CLAIM: Gov. Asa Hutchinson: “Hillary Clinton’s radical attempts at so-called ‘reform’ of the nation’s healthcare system would have been more destructive than even Obamacare has been.”

TRUTH: 20 million more Americans have health care as a result of the Affordable Care Act. As First Lady, Clinton worked with Democrats and Republicans to help expand health care to 8 million children.  And as president, she’s vowed to strengthen and improve ACA, work with governors to expand Medicaid, and give states the opportunity to pursue a public option and a Medicare opt-in for adults over 55.

  1. FALSE CLAIM: Gov. Asa Hutchinson: “Hillary Clinton’s bad judgment, as you heard last night, left us four dead Americans in Benghazi.”

TRUTH: Huffington Post: “After spending more than two years and $7 million, the House Select Committee on Benghazi released a report Tuesday that found — like eight investigations before it — no evidence of wrongdoing by then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton or other members of the Obama administration.”

  1. FALSE CLAIM: Sen. Ron Johnson: “[Hillary Clinton] hatched her cover-up story and repeatedly lied to the American people” about what inspired the tragic attacks in Benghazi.

TRUTH: Washington Post Fact-Checker: There is “little support for [the] claim that Clinton told the American people that the attacks were because of a video. She certainly spoke about the video, but always in the context of the protests that were occurring across the Middle East.”

  1. FALSE CLAIM:  NRA’s Chris Cox: “In case you’re wondering where Hillary Clinton stands. She said, quote, ‘the Supreme Court is wrong on the Second Amendment.’ Think about that. All the Supreme Court said was that you have the right to protect your life in your own home.”

TRUTH: FactCheck.org: “Clinton’s gun violence prevention proposal would impose restrictions, including a ban on semi-automatic ‘assault weapons,’ but it does not call for banning all guns…. Asked about Clinton’s remarks about the Second Amendment, Clinton campaign spokesman Josh Schwerin confirmed that Clinton was referring to the Heller case. He said Clinton ‘believes Heller was wrongly decided in that cities and states should have the power to craft common sense laws to keep their residents safe.’”

  1. FALSE CLAIM: Majority Leader Mitch McConnell: “Once a backer of the Keystone pipeline, last year [Hillary Clinton] opposed it.”

TRUTH: PolitiFact, after Clinton announced her opposition to the Keystone Pipeline: “Clinton said, ‘I never took a position on Keystone until I took a position on Keystone.’… We rate Clinton’s position a No Flip.”
