Horace Greeley High School Junior Victoria Xu Wins 2017 Congressional Art Competition

May 19, 2017 by Inside Press

Millwood Student to travel to Washington, DC, meet with Congresswoman Lowey, and have art displayed in U.S. Capitol

Runners up from Pearl River, Tappan and Yorktown Heights

Congresswoman Nita M. Lowey (Westchester/Rockland), the Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Committee, announced that Victoria Xu, a junior at Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua is the winner of the 2017 Congressional Art Competition for New York’s 17th Congressional District. Victoria’s acrylic on canvas, “Tonight on the Metro,” was judged to be first of 22 entries.

Congresswoman Nita Lowey with first place winner Victoria Xu together with (L-R): Daly Flanagan, Acting Director at Rockland Center for the Arts in West Nyack; Eileen MacAvery Kane, Instructor and Director of the Graphic Design Program at Rockland Community College in Suffern; and Carole Perry, Artistic Director and Curator at the Edward Hopper House Art Center in Nyack.

“I congratulate Victoria on winning this year’s Congressional Art Competition,” said Lowey. “I’m proud that her outstanding artwork, ‘Tonight on the Metro,’ will represent New York’s 17th Congressional District in the United States Capitol, where millions of visitors may see it.”

“The Chappaqua Central School District and Chappaqua Community are truly thrilled and proud of Victoria,” said Jennifer Schmidt, Art Teacher at Horace Greely High School. “Victoria’s painting is a testament to her technical and aesthetic ability.  She is an extraordinary artist with a strong work ethic, creative spirit and an admirable devotion to the visual arts. We appreciate the efforts of Congresswoman Nita Lowey’s office in recognizing high school artists, and join in honoring Victoria, whose commitment to the artistic process reflects her dedication and respect for this discipline.  Victoria has been an inspiration to all of the Horace Greeley Community.”

Annie McCormack, a Pearl River resident and a junior at Pearl River High School, came in second place for her photograph entitled “Reservoir;” Avery Schwarz, a Tappan resident and junior at Riverview High School, came in third for his “Royal Guards” mixed digital media; and Isobel Watson Ley, a Yorktown Heights resident and a junior at Yorktown High School, received an honorable mention for her watercolor, “The Hoatzin.”

“Our region is fortunate to be home to so many excellent young artists,” said Lowey. “I congratulate Annie, Avery, Isobel and all of the participants in this year’s Congressional Art Competition. Their artistic talents are excellent contributions to the Lower Hudson Valley’s cultural identity.”

The Congressional Art Competition is a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Each spring, students submit entries to their representative’s office, and panels of district artists select the winning entries. Winners are recognized both in their district and at an annual awards ceremony in June in Washington, DC. The winning works are displayed for one year at the U.S. Capitol.

Congresswoman Lowey hosted the 17th Congressional District awards ceremony at the Nanuet Public Library on Monday, May 8th. The three judges who chose the winners were Daly Flanagan, Acting Director at Rockland Center for the Arts in West Nyack; Carole Perry, Artistic Director and Curator at the Edward Hopper House Art Center in Nyack, and Eileen MacAvery Kane, Instructor and Director of the Graphic Design Program at Rockland Community College in Suffern.

In addition to promoting arts through the annual Congressional Art Competition, Congresswoman Lowey has been stalwart in her defense of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and served on the prestigious National Council for the Arts in recognition of her leadership.

White Plains Hospital Experts Aim to Equip Parents with News They Can Use as Fall Sports Season Gets Underway

sb10063098ce-001Just in time for the beginning of team try outs, games and practices, three highly regarded experts from White Plains Hospital will present a valuable talk on sports safety for kids.  The informational session is open to the public and will provide parents, coaches, and caregivers with the tools they need to prevent injuries and accidents among school-aged kids, as well as guidance on what to do when injuries do occur.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 2.6 million children ages 19 and younger are treated in hospital emergency rooms each year for sports and recreation-related injuries, including sprains and strains, and injuries involving growth plates and repetitive motions.

“Playing sports provide tremendous physical and social benefits for kids,” said Michael Schwartz, MD, orthopedic surgeon with White Plains Hospital Physician Associates Orthopedic Specialists who specializes in sports medicine, “but it is extremely important for parents and coaches to know how they can prevent physical injury among their competitive young athletes, and how to react when an injury occurs.”

The talk will be held on Thursday September 15th from 6:30-7:30 PM at the North Castle Public Library, Whippoorwill Road East, in Armonk.  It is part of the Hospital’s Take Charge of Your Health Community Education series, free of charge and open to the public.

Panelists are Dr. Samantha Lowe, a pediatrician with a background in emergency pediatrics; Dr. Michael Weintraub, a neurologist specializing in brain trauma, cerebral concussions and other neurological issues; and Dr. Schwartz.  Pediatrician Dr. Ellen Lestz will provide introductory remarks.  Dr. Lestz, Dr. Lowe and Dr. Weintraub are based at White Plains Hospital Medical and Wellness, a multispecialty outpatient facility in Armonk, while Dr. Schwartz practices out of White Plains.

Advance registration is not required, but interested individuals can call Jamie Bocchino at (914) 681-2650 or email JBocchino@wphospital.org for more information.

Off to Africa: With Secretary of State Hillary Clinton

August 20, 2012 by The Inside Press

Grace/ Photo by Jim D’Angelo/Ruby Media Group

Penned July 28, 2012:  “On July 21, I received word from the U.S. State Department that I was invited to join Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, with her staff and a group of 12 journalists, on a multiple country, 10-day trip to Africa, from July 31-August 10. At this writing, my staff and I have been working vigorously not only to close this issue a week early (without revealing why!), but to also follow State Department instructions on getting vaccinated and completing visa and press credential applications. Soon I will also receive the Secretary’s itinerary to gain a clear sense of her overall mission across that continent and specific goals for each destination.

Wondering how this incredible opportunity came about? At the start of covering the Memorial Day parade, in a precious two minute exchange with Secretary Clinton, and on a whim, I told her that I dream of the chance to fly with her–anytime, anywhere–on one of her missions.

She appeared interested and suggested I follow up with her director of operations, which I did. He, in turn, forwarded my eventual proposal to key staff at the State Department. I had written that I’d bring news of her travels home to her neighbors in a fun and engaging way. That is now my intent in the upcoming November issue.
As excited as I am by this honor, part of me knows that I will be relieved to come home to Chappaqua to my family and friends. In the meantime, welcome home to all of you too from your summer travels!

Please enjoy this issue which highlights our incredible local firefighters and features stories about the new and growing Chappaqua-Millwood Chamber of Commerce and the people behind it, including Rob Greenstein and executive director Linda Degelsmith. Check out too a story about Chuck Napoli’s “Bell Area Plan” intended to transform our town. I hope it happens. For now, I gotta go pack for Africa.”

Below: a quick preview of pics from Africa!

The publisher’s new photo was shot at a “Go Red” event early this summer on behalf of the American Heart Association.

August 5: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton accepting a gift from 17-year-old Triza Lapari: the traditional “chitenje” skirt wrap during a festive visit to Camp GLOW for girls in Malawi—a highlight in her nine country tour throughout the continent. In her remarks, Clinton commended efforts at the camp “to imbue young women with an understanding of their own internal talents and opportunities and aspirations, and then to develop your own God-given potential and make a contribution not only to your families and communities but indeed to your country.” She also commended and met with Peace Corps volunteers at the Camp “to give young people in the world today a chance to come together and to learn skills that will last you a lifetime.”
