Chappaqua Summer Writing Program for Girls

A SUMMER ACADEMIC PROGRAM FOR YOUNG WOMEN AGES 14-17 WHO LOVE READING AND WHO WANT TO STRENGTHEN THEIR WRITING SKILLS OVER THE SUMMER.

Ages 14-17
July 11-July 22, 2016
2PM-5PM, Monday – Friday

100 King Street, Chappaqua NY

The literature to be studied includes poetry, fairy tales, drama, and 19th-century novels. Modeled on the First-Year Writing Seminars at Princeton University, the program also includes elements designed to prepare students for the college application process, with half of each class meeting devoted to the study of literature and the other half to workshops and exercises geared at building critical reading and writing skills. Students will emerge from the course with a draft of a college application essay.

Meetings will be held in the Horace Greeley House in downtown Chappaqua. The program fee is $575 and enrollment is capped at 15. For enrollment information please visit chappaquasummerprogram.weebly.com or contact: chappaquasummerprogram@gmail.com or 914.314.7009.

The Chappaqua Summer Writing Program for Girls is directed by Keri Walsh. Dr. Walsh has taught at Oxford and Princeton University, and is now a professor of English Literature at Fordham University. She is the editor of The Letters of Sylvia Beach (the first publisher of James Joyce’s Ulysses and the owner of the Shakespeare and Company bookshop in Paris). Dr. Walsh is now completing an edition of Joyce’s Dubliners.

Chappaqua Summer Concert Series Kicks off July 7 with the Mike Risko Band

The annual New Castle Summer Concert Series kicks off this Wednesday, July 6th at 7PM with a performance by the Mike Risko Band. So, bring your blanket or lawn chair, a picnic dinner or snack, and get ready for some great music and fun for adults and kids of all ages. Concerts begin at 7 p.m. at the Town of New Castle Recreation Field. Admission is free.
Breezemont Day camp is the top sponsor. Other sponsors include Korth & Shannahan Painting & Carpentry, Financial Asset Management, Allstate Insurance, Jodi’s Gym and Esposito’s Sausage.

“Art Around Town” Fun Feature of First Thursday in Armonk

On July 7th, “Art Around Town” will be yet another good reason to head out for another “First Thursday” in Armonk. Visitors can enjoy two popular bands and select from (skip cooking!) an array of yummy eats and assorted family friendly festivities around town. Four local artists (one painter and three photographers) and a special selection of their fine works can be found in one of the listed venues along with a reception.

The youth band is from Bedford’s School of Rock; the adult band is Willful Misconduct (they played here last summer and were a big hit). For a wonderful summer night out with the whole family: Come listen to music in beautiful Armonk Square, browse the local art–and don’t forget to grab a bite at one of the many eateries offering a promotion! Everyone’s ‘talking about’ Armonk’s amazing ‘restaurant scene’ so don’t miss out. Harvey School to Host Program on Artist Mary Cassatt

The Harvey School Walker Center for the Arts Presents
“Looking for Mary Cassatt”

A Lecture/PowerPoint presentation by Prof. Susan Courtney

Playwright Susan Courtney will make a presentation called “Looking for Mary Cassatt” June 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the Lasdon Theater of the Walker Center for the Arts at The Harvey School.

The author will speak about the American Impressionist’s struggles to balance family obligations with career goals in France in the 1800s as well as share her own journey in researching Cassatt’s life for her two-act play, ”Girl in Blue Armchair.” Courtney will display images of Cassatt’s work as well as those of her contemporaries, her residences in France and the present-day Cassatt family in Maine.

Tickets are $12, $10 for seniors. Tickets may be purchased at the door or on online at www.harveyschool.org

Susan Courtney is a professor of theatre at Westchester Community College. With an MA in Educational Theatre from NYU, she currently teaches acting classes at WCC, New Castle Community Center and Clinton Street Center as well as the Harvey Cavalier Camp. She is a member of Sag-AFTRA, Actors Equity and the Dramatists Guild.

Looking for Mary Cassatt flyer

As a member of the Actors Studio Playwright/Directors Workshop in NYC, Courtney developed her two-act play about Mary Cassatt. Through a grant from NYFA, Courtney’s play was produced at the Lasdon Theater in Harvey’s Walker Center for the Arts in 2011.
