Eminent Neuroscientist to Speak at PTA Meeting

October 20, 2012 by Sarah Ellen Rindsberg

On October 22, Sam Wang, a neuroscientist at Princeton, will address the PTA on the topic of “How Well Do You Know Your Child’s Brain.”  Wang, co-author of the book, “Welcome To Your Child’s Brain:  How the Mind Grows From Conception to College,”  is currently working with the Chappaqua School District as the scientific advisor for educational best-practices.  He views his collaboration with the district as “a conversation between researchers and educators.”

Wang has begun meeting with teachers and administrators and finds that they are “very open to the possibility of improving their practice and implementing new ideas.”  Optimal methods and settings for learning will be discussed.  One of the first areas Wang will pursue is the design of the classroom.

In the 1980s Wang changed his course of study from physics to neuroscience, a field which he finds tremendously exciting.  In his lab, research on autism is one of the focal points.  Progress in this area is one of the most dynamic subjects in neuroscience today.   “It’s [now] possible to talk about the mechanics of how autism works,” Wang observed.

Responding to an inquiry as to whether neuroscience would be an appropriate addition to the curriculum, Wang mentioned that he teaches a course entitled ”Neuroscience and Everyday Life.” at Princeton which has no prerequisites.  “Neuroscience is mature enough that is’s possible to teach it at the high school level,” he noted.

PTA President Maura Marcon related that parents are “really exciting and interested” about the upcoming presentation.  She received a call from a parent of pre-schoolers wondering whether the talk was open to all – Marcon assured her that it is.

Cancer Survivor Jordan Fried of Chappaqua to Run NYC Marathon

October 18, 2012 by The Inside Press

Jordan Fried of Chappaqua, a student at Hofstra University, will be running in his third NYC Marathon (PR of 3:13) this year as part of “Fred’s Team” to raise money for cancer research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering.

Fried, having battled leukemia at the early age of three, was treated at Sloan-Kettering in the early nineties. During that time, he remembers a fellow patient and running legend, Fred Lebow – determined to run to raise money for a cure – jogging through the halls of the hospital. It was then that Fried was inspired, and as a cancer-free patient today, he continues to run in honor of Fred and the other pediatric patients of Sloan-Kettering.

Nationally, the 26.2 mile, five-borough race on Sunday, Nov. 4. race broadcast will be available live at 9 a.m. ET on ESPN2 , and at 7 a.m. ET on WatchESPN.com and via the WatchESPN app. ABC will also present a two-hour national broadcast at 4 p.m. Locally, tri-state area residents can tune in to WABC-TV and 7online.com at 7 a.m. ET.

It was Easy to Fall in Love

October 16, 2012 by The Inside Press

with the Chamber sponsored Fall Festival this past Saturday.

Just Between Us: Downtown Chappaqua came alive as perhaps never before on a crisp and clear autumn day that included face painting, bead making, hay rides, playing stations, kitten adoptions, fabulous new sidewalk sale finds and a donut eating and apple pie contest—a big early in the day highlight. Chappaqua’s Teresa Shen won that contest with her three apple preparation and handsome, tasty crust… amidst some stiff competition leftovers I happily sampled when the hoopla had subsided.  Having missed the opportunity to try Teresa’s pie earlier, I  had the very special privilege the next morning to enjoy an entire slice at her home!  See below. Now that was VIP treatment I could taste!

I was also glad to hear later about Bill and Hillary Clinton’s visit into town.  No doubt they enjoyed the music by Music Mixer every bit as much as everyone else too. And just a chance to say hello to friends and neighbors is a gift and opportunity for them–and that seems true for everyone these days. I noticed that lots of folks were commenting about how they were really feeling a sense of community with so many families and folks out and about.  All I could think was: Let’s take back the streets.  — Grace
