Choosing a Safe Gymnastics Program – What to Ask!

  • Does the program have clearly defined curriculum?
  • What are the qualifications of the teachers? USAG safety certified, background checked, CPR/First Aid, experience working with children, education, gymnasts…the more qualifications, the better!
  • What is their initial training? What ongoing training do their teachers receive?
  • Are the class ratios low? This is very important for a safe gymnastics environment.
  • Is the equipment suitable for the age group?
  • Is the gym set up safely? There should be clear paths for children to walk and safe landing areas for dismounts.
  • How clean is the gym? Clean and safe go hand in hand.
  • What are the qualifications of Program Manager? Their training, education, background and experience in the
  • position are all important.
  • How carefully are their students supervised? The teachers should be able to see all of their students at all times (never with their backs to them.) Teachers should also always have their entire group of children
  • Are multiple staff members always present? A facility should always have more than one staff member present and lobby should be attended.

A “Second Step” Toward Helping Children Make Safe Choices

When considering the needs of a child, safety comes first. There are different kinds of safety that are essential for a child’s well-being. Physical safety may be most obvious, however personal safety is equally important. It is never too early to begin teaching a child how to make good, safe choices. The basis for good decision making starts with an ability to identify and articulate one’s needs and feelings. At Mount Kisco Child Care Center, we are dedicated to assuring that all children in our care are taught these skills.

Our teachers are formally trained to employ a curriculum called Second Step. This program teaches a child to verbalize his/her feelings with age appropriate lessons and educational toys. This ability fosters successful interactions with their peers as well as with adults. These positive experiences are the building blocks for high self esteem and confidence. It is our goal to nurture these qualities in each child that we serve. A child who feels good about his/herself is equipped to make positive choices in adolescence and into adulthood.

The Wonderful Wally Peterkin: Golf Pro, Picture Framer

wally golfingIn a lovely summertime visit to the home of Chappaqua-based Wally Peterkin, I discovered that the long time golf pro is as adept at framing as he is at swinging.  His garage off Hardscrabble Road is a converted full service frame shop and  “word of mouth” continues to keep him in business.  He had approached Inside Chappaqua, however, not with picture framing in mind, but rather to advertise his “no gimmicks lesson” to help anyone “shoot Par golf.”

Not being a golfer, I can only imagine that it’s a swing so fine, his technique effortlessly guides the ball to its rightful destination.  So whether you are looking to “explode to the 90% range” or to beautifully frame your baby blowing out her first candle,  Peterkin can help you with either.  Just tell him you heard about him in Inside Chappaqua or soon, also in Inside Armonk.  Visits with Wally are by appointment only. Walgreens Presents Maria Fareri Hospital with Generous Donation

walgreens checkThis past Thursday, Eric Buff, manager of Chappaqua’s Walgreens, proudly presented the Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital with a check for $5,707.

The store’s contribution was the second highest in the county at the close of a recent fundraising campaign (raising $350,000) undertaken by the hospital.

Buff partnered with the Walgreens in Thornwood to gather the dollars after setting up scannable coupons—area customers shopping at the two stores generously rose to the occasion with their donations, making  the nearly $6,000 raised possible.

“As a company, we try to get as involved as we can because we have a vested interest in the health and wellness of our customers and the community at large,” said Buff. “Our employees were  also behind us 100 percent which made all the difference.”

Speaking on behalf of Maria Fareri Hospital, Kelli Teglas noted: “Walgreens was a pleasure to work with. They really stepped up and got their employees on board and we are just very grateful.”

The fundraising efforts were also a natural outgrowth of an established relationship with Westchester Medical Center via a “bedside delivery system” in place with WMC.  Prescriptions are filled and as a convenience delivered to the hospital campus with the pharmacist’s instructions.

“Nurses or social workers coordinate with our pharmacy to go over the use of the medications with patients,” explained Supendeep Dosanoh, Walgreen’s pharmacy manager in Chappaqua. “These efforts are critical toward helping decrease the readmission rate at the hospital,” he said.
