May 26, 2015 by The Inside Press

dina_headshot2015_smallA Commitment to Individualized, Integrated Nutrition has Helped Thousands to Better Health

The Khader Center, Westchester County’s premier integrated health and nutrition provider, is celebrating founder Dina Khader’s twenty-fifth year of private practice in Mount Kisco. In her quarter-century of serving Westchester residents with targeted, highly personalized nutrition consultation, Dina Khader, MS, RD, CDN, MIfHI, has built a reputation as a dedicated, caring, knowledgeable health care practitioner and a source of inspiration to clients and colleagues alike.

Ms. Khader is a registered dietitian, holding a Master of Science degree in nutrition from New York Medical College. She is a Master Fellow and featured presenter with the Institute for Human Individuality, and works closely with the European Institute of Personalized Prevention. She is the author of The Food Combining/Blood Type Diet Solution, and is frequently sought as a lecturer, author, and expert commentator for radio, television, and print media.

“I began offering nutrition consulting in 1990, with a real commitment to getting to know the specific needs and preferences of each client, so that I could provide customized nutrition plans fine-tuned to each individual,” explains Ms. Khader. “Right away, people were surprised how effective a carefully-tailored nutrition solution could be, and how much easier it is to stick to a plan that works so well. A lot has changed in the last twenty-five years, but that dedication to individual care hasn’t wavered, because it has made such a big difference for so many people.”

Ms. Khader’s unwavering dedication, as well as the considerable success her clients have experienced and the word-of-mouth reputation that success has generated, has been a major factor in her success. In 2009, she founded The Khader Center, a full-service integrated nutrition center that offers a number of targeted holistic health solutions, including Ms. Khader’s expert nutrition advice. The Khader Center quickly gained popularity as a friendly, welcoming place to achieve optimal health.

rabbi_josh_stromCongregation B’nai Yisrael (CBY) of Armonk announced today that its congregation elected Rabbi Joshua Strom as its new permanent Rabbi, effective July 1, 2015.

Rabbi Strom is currently serving as an Associate Rabbi for Temple Shaaray Tefila in New York City. He received his bachelor’s degree in English from Colgate University and was ordained by the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in 2008.

“We are extremely excited to welcome Rabbi Strom to our congregation and local Jewish community,” said Lisa Broomer, president of CBY. Sew Happy Sewing: Hand and Machine Sewing Instruction for Kids throughout Westchester

May 20, 2015 by The Inside Press

Wainwright_37Sew Happy Sewing, Inc began in 2012 when Kim Mulcahy decided to turn her hobby in to a cottage industry. She realized that sewing was a life skill that was missing and yet desperately needed by the women and kids in her town. Now, in 2015, the Sew Happy Sewing program is being taught at after school clubs in over 13 schools in Westchester and Kim has 3 talented instructors who, under her guidance, teach sewing in a nurturing, grass roots fashion. Sew Happy Sewing covers both hand and machine sewing but Kim is a keen supporter of hand sewing and often explains to the kids that they can take out a needle and thread anywhere but not a sewing machine! As with everything it’s about finding a balance!

Sew Happy Sewing also offers “boutique” camps in Rye, Greenwich and Chappaqua. “Threads” Camp is tailored to inspire potential fashion designers and fashionistas out there. The difference between the Sew Happy “Threads” Camp and other fashion-type camps is that we actually teach the kids how to design and SEW wearable garments. At “Threads” Camp, the kids work through fun design challenges, sometimes in groups and sometimes alone to create unique garments and they plan and orchestrate their own fashion show on the last day.

Wainwright_8“Summer Of Sewing” Camp offers a combination of sewing projects from stuffed animals and gadget cozy’s to pj pants so it’s a great introduction to sewing allowing the kids to try their hand at many different areas of sewing.

The kids who attend our camps make great new friends and connections and often move on to advanced sewing classes and workshops with Sew Happy. We offer the camp to ages 8 – 17 and then we group the kids by age with age appropriate projects and assignments.

Sew Happy offers two birthday party packages, “Sew Fun” is hand sewing for ages 7 and up and offers a choice of super cute projects like bunny puppet, mouse-in-a-tin, gadget cozy or cup-cake softee. “Extreme Sewing” is a machine sewing party where the kids decorate fabric with decorative machine stitches and then they make it into a pillow.

In addition, Sew Happy Sewing has regular workshops in Rye and is planning to expand in to other areas of Westchester this year. Private lessons for individuals or groups are also available. Call 917 885 7716 for more information, visit www.sewhappyusa.net or email Kim at kim@sewhappyusa.net.

Robot-Assisted Partial Knee Replacement Surgery Being Performed at Northern Westchester Hospital

May 19, 2015 by The Inside Press

Northern Westchester Hospital Main EntranceNorthern Westchester Hospital has announced that Victor Khabie, MD, FAAOS, FACS, Co-Chief of Orthopedic Surgery and Director of Sports Medicine at the Orthopedic and Spine Institute, performed the first NAVIO robot-assisted partial knee replacement in New York State at NWH. This leading-edge technology incorporates image-guided navigation with the precision of robotics, enabling surgeons to see and treat only the damaged portion of the knee and leaving the healthy bone in place. A highly accomplished team of surgeons at NWH have been trained to perform this procedure, including Evan H. Karas, MD, FAAOS; Victor Khabie, MD, FAAOS, FACS; Eric L. Grossman, MD, FAAOS; Stuart T. Styles, MD, FAAOS; David J. Yasgur, MD, FAAOS; Jeffrey H. Yormak, M.D., F.A.A.O.S.

Unlike a total knee replacement, this muscle and ligament sparing approach utilizes an incision that is one-third the size, which saves healthy bone, ligaments and tissues. The result is a surgery that is less painful, enables patients to recover faster as compared to a complete knee replacement, and return to a more active lifestyle.

A partial knee replacement also fills a gap in treatment options for patients with knee pain.  When knee pain begins, patients often self-treat with over-the-counter medications. When this no longer works, physical therapy, pain management injections, and even synovial fluid replacement are all used.  Unfortunately, when these treatments become ineffective, the only other option available has been a total knee replacement.

“A partial knee replacement provides a very promising option for patients. Total knee replacements are incredibly invasive procedures, removing bone, tissue, and severing muscle to create room for the implant. With a partial knee replacement, the incisions are much smaller and much less traumatic for patients. The procedure takes less time, is less painful, and provides patients with a shorter recovery time. Within only a few weeks of surgery, many patients are back to skiing, swimming, golfing, and even playing tennis,” stated Dr. Khabie.

The partial knee implant can provide patients, suffering with advanced pain from arthritis, another 10 or 15 years of an active lifestyle. As time and use wear on, any of the implanted pieces could be replaced, therefore increasing the life of the partial knee replacement.

The hand-held robotics and built-in image guidance navigation provide the surgeons with a level of precision previously unavailable. The Navio surgical system features proprietary robot-assisted technology that integrates handheld intelligent instruments with an intuitive CT-free registration and patient-specific planning process. The Navio unicondylar and patellofemoral knee replacement software guide the surgeon in creating implant plans that localize components and balance soft-tissue. The technology translates that information into a virtual surgical plan that removes the need for standard mechanical cutting guides and jigs. The handheld instrumentation uses multiple control modes to help the surgeon very precisely prepare the bone for implantation.
