Quaker Hill Tavern: Celebrating 10 Years!

December 2, 2015 by The Inside Press

Story and Photo By Karen Talbot

quaker hill

Open every day for dinner, and Wednesday to Sunday for lunch, this casual family restaurant offers a place for individuals or families to meet, enjoy a good meal at a reasonable cost; regular patrons frequently come back again the same week. The owners and the staff take pride in knowing their guests and remembering their food and drink preferences.

A “10514 Burger” is very popular, served on grilled rye with Swiss cheese, sautéed pastrami, house made slaw and Russian dressing with a side of house French fries. Chili, soups and salads are also offered for lunch. Customers repeatedly order chicken wings in three flavor and size choices, fish tacos, seven burger choices and the N.Y. strip steak for dinner. Quaker Hill Tavern is not open for Thanksgiving or Christmas, but leading up to the Holidays, Erin will create a special cocktail and Erick will make a dessert that recognizes Holiday traditions. To celebrate their 10 years in business, and to support worthy causes, Quaker Hill has also designated 10 Mondays: “Monday Matters,” and donates 10% of their gross sales to a worthy charity.

Le Jardin Du Roi: A Neighborhood Treasure

December 2, 2015 by The Inside Press

Story and Photo By Karen Talbot

jardin

Le Jardin du Roi got its name from its garden for outdoor dining and its King Street location in downtown Chappaqua. This bustling French American eatery is owned by Joe Quartararo, and has been in business for 15 years serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, seven days a week. The restaurant is a neighborhood place with good food, good service and reasonable prices. Joe and his staff want customers to feel like they are coming to his house for a special meal. For breakfast, the most popular item is the Ouef du Roi–poached egg on a goat cheese potato cake over ratatouille. For lunch, Le Croque-monsieur and Le Croque-madame–a traditional grilled French open-face ham and cheese sandwich, served with fries are very popular. The winter dinner menu offers Cassoulet, Veal Stew, and Coq au Vin and there are eight choices of sauces for Les Moules Frites.

The young French chef, Rudy Beltran-Prats, has been with the restaurant for seven years, and loves cooking good food that he would like to eat and share with others. His menu changes every six months and his plans for the Holidays include: Pan Seared Fois Gras and fresh oysters on the half shell. For dessert, Rudy, a former pastry chef, will offer a Buche de Noel and his most popular three chocolate brownie a la Mode with caramel sauce. The restaurant does a large catering business, right through the football season, with the BBQ smoker on the premises where ribs, chicken, brisket and pulled pork are available in larger quantities for delivery or takeout.

Pazzo Pizza & Trattoria: True Italian Cuisine

December 2, 2015 by The Inside Press

Story and Photo By Karen Talbot

pazzo

Pazzo Pizza & Trattoria is a brand new handsome Tuscan restaurant with stucco stone walls and a tiled floor. It is located in the Armonk Town Center near I-684. Pete Monteleone, the owner, is proud to be the only restaurant in Westchester where you can find the Romana Pizza from Rome, done in true Italian fashion. Chef Andrea Inganito uses “Double O” Italian flour to create this thin crusted square shaped pizza pie. Three popular choices are the Margherita … made with house made fresh mozzarella, San Marzano tomato sauce, parmigiano cheese and fresh basil…the Calabrese … made with hot soppressata, San Marzano tomatoes, carmelized onions and fontina cheese…and the Contadina … which consists of arugula, prosciutto, San Marzano tomato sauce, extra virgin olive oil, parmigiano cheese, cherry tomato and buffalo mozzarella. The Romana pizza has eight slices and ranges from $12.95 to $15.95. One slice costs $4.50. They also have traditional pizza in many combinations and a traditional Sicilian which has a thicker crust.

Another specialty of the restaurant are the Panuzzos, which are also made with the special “Double O” Italian flour. These are described as: “Not a sandwich, Not a Panini, but better”…crispy on the outside and soft and delicious on the inside. There are eight choices to choose from: the Puglia … eggplant, zucchini, red peppers, mushrooms, fontina, pesto acetobalsamic is one of the choices and they are all priced at $9.95.

Nick Croce, the Manager, states that Penne Vodka with béchamel tomato sauce and Pappardelle Bolognese with thick noodles, and traditional meat sauce are good pasta choices for dinner. The two dinner chicken offerings that are ordered most are Chicken Capricciosa … boneless with grilled arugula, tomatoes, shaved parmigiano in vinaigrette and Chicken Campagnola … on the bone with Vidalia onion, new potatoes, hot cherry peppers and garlic, rosemary and thyme. Wild Bronzino is an excellent fish entrée done with lemon, mint, extra virgin olive oil and “lentone.” Keep an eye out for special dinner entrees which may be added for the Holidays.

Kittle House: A Traditional & Fun Gathering Spot

December 1, 2015 by The Inside Press

Story and Photos By Karen Talbot

kittlehouse

John Crabtree and his family purchased this European-style country manor house and restaurant in 1981. The structure originally built in 1790 as a barn has an illustrious history dating back to the origins of Chappaqua. Farm-to-table dining literally started here and Kittle House maintains an excellent reputation as an outlet for the finest sustainable, naturally raised and grown products from small artisanal farmers in the area.

The beautiful grounds and gardens provide an idyllic setting for both dining and special occasions. The Kittle House offers 12 guest rooms for overnight stays, and dining primarily in either the main dining room or the historic Tap Room which are open every day for lunch and dinner and Sunday for their famous brunch.

Chef Jay Lippin creates noteworthy food using traditional French techniques. For lunch, the Maine lobster roll is a favorite with avocado, tomato, firecracker slaw and roasted garlic potato chips. Jay specializes in game dishes for dinner such as Highland Farms Venison Osso Buco with creamy wild chive polenta, broccolini in a red wine sauce, or Helder Herdwyck Farms Guinea Hen with scarlet blush corn, local bean and sweet pepper hash in a red sorrel sauce. The Kittle House’s dessert classic is the “Chocolate Gift” which combines pastry and cake shaped like a gift box. The Holidays are especially festive at the Kittle House and the restaurant has been a traditional and fun gathering spot for family members over many generations.

The Kittle House has a wine cellar of over 60,000 bottles. It has been the recipient of The Grand Award from The Wine Spectator since 1994 and the Award of Great Distinction from The Wine Enthusiast since 2006.

Downtown Chappaqua: Charm and Convenience

August 5, 2015 by The Inside Press

Story and Gazebo Photo by Marianne Campolongo

With chic boutiques, restaurants to suit every palate, goodies for the younger set from toys to ice cream cones, galleries, salons, and a host of other enterprises housed in quaint storefronts, shopping and dining local in downtown Chappaqua is a pleasure. Whether your tastes run to antiques or modern art, practical clothing or the latest fashions, you are sure to find what you need in one of the shops along the tree-lined streets of town. The downtown area, which runs from the top of Bedford Road (Route 117) down King Street and then branches out along North and South Greeley Avenues, offers more than just shopping and dining convenience. Interspersed among the shops are lovely private homes and houses of worship with lushly landscaped lawns that border the sidewalk, making for a pleasant walking and shopping experience. Bits of history, such as the Horace Greeley House, add to the charm.

On a lovely spring day, start at the top of King Street and walk downhill along the path under lush star magnolias in bloom. Within a few feet you can purchase clothes, get marketing or spiritual advice, pick up convenience store necessities, wines and spirits, do your banking, have someone do your nails and hair (and your furry friend’s as well), get your clothes dry cleaned, grab a sandwich, pizza, or cup of coffee, dining in or to go, and you’ve just started out.

As you proceed down King Street, past beautifully maintained period homes, dentists and doctors, veterinarians and therapists, photographers and plumbers, architects and surveyors, bankers and financial planners, and a myriad of other professionals can help you out without straying beyond the boundaries of downtown Chappaqua.

As summer approaches, many restaurants have outdoor seating so meet a friend or take the family out to dine al fresco for breakfast, lunch or dinner. A new restaurant at the Chappaqua Train Station has just been opened for commuter or anytime convenience. Or grab a bite and settle in on one of the benches in the charming pocket park or up by the waterfall at the duck pond. On Wednesday nights in July, it’s time for a full-blown picnic on the ballfields by the gazebo (bring your own picnic basket or choose from the local vendors on hand) when the Summer Concert Series is in full session. And do not miss the weekly farmer’s market or the annual Sidewalk Sale!

As autumn approaches and the nesting urge takes hold, decorators, antique shops, galleries, and other home goods stores can help you complete your home decor, or simply pop into town for a bouquet of flowers to brighten up your home. Make room for new purchases by donating older items to local consignment shops, pick up a charming find at bargain prices, or get DIY advice at the local hardware store.

As winter rounds the bend, find a good book at the library to curl up with by the fire, or a sled or shovel for outdoor activity. The beachwear and sandals you purchased in summer give way to warm coats, snow boots and other outdoor wear. Beautiful cocktail dresses and finely tailored suits are also on the agenda, with sparkling jewels to round out your outfit. You might even spy one of the Clintons completing their holiday shopping.

Though it is only about a mile long, you can find nearly everything you need from shopping to dining to services in Chappaqua’s downtown district. So, before you trek off to the crowded mall, try shopping local. You will be glad you did.
