Lasdon Park

By Faith Ann Butcher

• Teatown Lake Reservation,
teatown.org
As the layer of ice melts off the top of the lake, Teatown Lake Reservation is the place to be to see nature spring into action. Located three miles west of Taconic State Parkway’s Route 134 exit, the reservation, which extends into the towns of Cortlandt, New Castle and Yorktown, offers guided programs where people can learn about animals and vegetation that are native to the region’s habitat. Top 10 Fitness Mistakes

March 4, 2012 by The Inside Press

10: Quantity over quality.
For quality results, choose quality exercises and increase the quality of each movement. By pushing harder, you gain better results in less time. Tip: Leave your phone and reading material in your locker!

9: Incorrectly measuring results.
Skip obsessing over the scale to track progress. Instead, focus on how you feel overall and track your heart rate, the amount of reps or weight you use, or the distance you cover in a certain amount of time.

8: Following the latest fitness fads.
Ben Franklin once said, “Don’t believe anything you read and only half of what you see.” This applies to fitness products and diets seen on TV! There is no magic bullet to getting fit.

7: Not getting enough sleep.
Sleep is vital to a person’s well being, important for muscle recovery and ensures you have enough energy to work out.

6: Staying with the same old routine.
Stuck in a rut? Switch up your workout. Change aspects of your routine–including the intensity, order, sets or reps. Try new variations of exercises or new ones altogether.

5: Skipping the warm up.
A proper warm-up increases heart rate and body temperature, prepares the body for movement and decreases your risk of injury.

4: Exercising with incorrect form.
Using proper form is critical when performing an exercise safely and effectively; a certified personal trainer will help teach form too.

3: Thinking “doing cardio” is enough.
Both sexes must incorporate resistance/weight training into their workout regimen to maximize their results in the gym. Strong is the new skinny!

2: Not eating right.
You can work your butt off all you want in the gym but if you don’t put that same effort into eating right, well, don’t expect to watch your body transform!

1: Not setting clear goals.
Going to the gym without a plan of action is like going on vacation without researching your destination. A certified personal trainer will tailor a training program to take you to your optimum fitness level.

Top Ten Ways to Help (without Hurting) During the College Admissions Process

March 4, 2012 by The Inside Press

By Alex Weiner

10. Acknowledge your child’s stress as well as your own. The college admissions process is a very busy time, but millions of people have gotten through it. So will you.

9. Make a calendar. Post on the fridge or other prominent place. Write in important application deadlines, due dates for financial aid forms, dates for SAT-I and SAT Subject Tests, etc.

8. Forget “what looks good”
to colleges. It only looks good to the colleges if it looks good to the student.

7. Create a filing system. Keep all college material organized; each individual college should have its own folder. Have your child work with you to file info correctly.

6. Don’t call the Admissions office on your child’s behalf. It’s perfectly acceptable for your kids to seek answers to their questions, but he or she should contact the colleges themselves.

5. Don’t be afraid to ask for advice.
The college admissions process can be very confusing, especially when you haven’t experienced it previously. Talk to friends whose kids are in college, visit your child’s high school counselor–or call Collegewise, 914 285-8495.

4. Have honest discussions with your child. The process of applying and selecting a college raises sensitive issues ranging from your desire to help your child attain personal happiness to financial concerns. Share opinions but also listen carefully to what your child has to say.

3. Plan college visits. Before your child ultimately selects a college to attend, it’s vital to visit potential colleges to get a feeling for the campus and the student body.

2. Forget resume stuffing. Students are better served spending time doing what they enjoy.

1. Remember: you’re not going to college, your child is. Kids need to take charge! Your role: listen, be supportive, and help in appropriate ways.

Alex Weiner is owner and head counselor at Collegewise, a college admissions counseling company founded over a decade ago. Today, with offices in White Plains, NY, Irvine, CA, Chatham, NJ, and Seattle, WA, Collegewise is the nation’s largest college counseling company, helping hundreds of students find, apply to, and attend the right colleges every year.
