Family of Gov. Cuomo Announce Mario Cuomo’s Passing; Laud Accomplishments

The family of former Governor Mario M. Cuomo announced that the Governor passed away from natural causes due to heart failure this evening at home with his loving family at his side. He was 82 years of age.cuomo mario

The Fifty Second Governor of New York State, Governor Mario Cuomo served as New York’s Chief Executive from 1983 through 1994. He was credited with simultaneously improving the business environment of New York and the quality of life for its citizens, despite a national recession at the time.

Governor Cuomo presented eleven consecutive balanced budgets, reduced taxes, and implemented comprehensive governmental ethics and fiscal reforms. From the time Cuomo took office, New York experienced an increase of hundreds of thousands of jobs and tens of thousands of businesses.

Proclaiming the Decade of the Child, Mario Cuomo ushered in a multi-faceted effort to improve the lives of all New York’s children. His administration became the first in the country to develop an Energy Plan and to sign into law controls on acid rain among many undertakings.

Prior to his election as governor in 1983, Governor Cuomo served in the public and private practice of law for 18 years, simultaneously teaching as an adjunct professor for more than ten years at The St. John’s School of Law.

Mario Cuomo first gained public recognition for his resolution of the Forest Hills housing controversy in 1972. He was appointed to serve as the Secretary of State of New York in 1975 and in 1978 he was elected as Lieutenant Governor. He later received national attention for his 1984 Keynote Address at the Democratic National Convention in San Francisco.

2014 marked 60 years of marriage to first lady Matilda Raffa Cuomo, a graduate of The St. John’s University Teacher’s College. The Governor is survived by his children, Margaret (Howard Maier), Andrew (Sandra Lee), Maria (Kenneth Cole), Madeline (Brian O’Donoghue), Christopher (Cristina Cuomo), as well as 14 grandchildren: Christina Cuomo Perpignano,
Marianna Cuomo Maier, Cara Kennedy Cuomo, Mariah Kennedy Cuomo, Michaela Kennedy Cuomo, Emily Cole, Amanda Cole, Katherine Cole, Samantha O’Donoghue, Kristin O’Donoghue, Tess O’Donoghue, Bella Cuomo, Mario Cuomo, and Carolina Regina Cuomo.

It revolves around eight women in the New York / Connecticut area, all of whom battle breast cancer while throwing parties and charity functions, getting kids off to school, and participating in political rallies. Rejecting the notion that illness owns the patient, #Cancerland explores the concept of one’s refusal to be hobbled and that “living well is the best revenge.”

Champagne Joy is the founder of the #Cancerland charity as well as the creator of this documentary TV project. As a terminally ill Stage 4 Metastatic Breast Cancer sufferer, she is determined to make #Cancerland her legacy — a “place” in this world where women can turn for resources, advice and love from fellow women who have the disease and refuse to be defined by it, but insist on redefining it.

The Mental Health Association of Westchester — Making a Difference

On Friday, October 24th, the Mental Health Association of Westchester held their Denim & Dreams Fall Benefit at the CV Rich Mansion in White Plains. MHA was founded in 1946, and its Westchester agency continues the vision and dream of bringing high-quality, cost-effective mental health services. It offers various recovery-oriented health services and currently serves 25,000 women, men, children, and families.

The annual benefit was night of celebration with live music, cocktails, and dinner. Dr. Amy Kohn, CEO, welcomed about 150 supporters in attendance. Approximately $125,000 was raised through donations, raffles, and silent auction items. The monies raised will go towards programs they determine most in need. Some include the CASA program that advocates for children in foster care, their peer recovery program, and support services for their clinics.

Mayor Thomas Roach attended the event and spoke about the mental health challenges facing our communities. He is one of the New York mayors that signed on to the Mayors Challenge to End Veteran Homelessness. Recognition and awards were presented to the honorees for their outstanding achievements. This year, MHA’s On the Move Award went to Anne Kauffman Nolon, MPH, President and CEO of HRHCare. MHA’s Lifetime Achievement Award went to Edye Schwartz, DSW, LCSW-R, Director of Systems Transformation, New York Association of Psychiatric Rehabilitation Services, and the Spirit Award went to Mary Nicolich for her MHA volunteer service as a CASA.

MHA is dedicated to dismantling the stigma through educating the public on mental health issues. They remain steadfast in their belief that every individual deserves quality mental health care, housing, employment, and a safe environment to recover. Their focus is on respect and equality for those in need of mental health services. MHA’s approach is to view the person as whole, looking beyond their challenges, and help them discover their own unique talents and realize their own dreams.

As summer draws to an end, a new wave of festivities awaits in Westchester County, the first stop in the Lower Hudson Valley. From exciting competitions and outdoor family fun to craft fairs and music festivals, Westchester has so much to explore.

Get Active

If you’re an athlete or sports enthusiast, get ready. Adults and children can show their strength by participating in the 2014 ToughMan ToughKids Triathlon on Sunday, September 7. It includes a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike race and a 13.1-mile run in Croton-on-Hudson. There is also a race for children so that the entire family can join in on the fun. Registration for the clinic and course preview is now open for both ToughKids and ToughMan participants on Saturday and Sunday, August 23-24. It allows the perfect opportunity to learn, train and ask questions. The clinics include swimming in the Hudson River, riding the course with coaches and support vehicles, and running the course. The American Gold Cup, rated as the United States No. 1 competition by the North American Riders Group, returns to Old Salem Farm on September 10-14, Wednesday through Sunday. The state-of-the-art equestrian sports training and event facility widely recognized by competitors as a premiere venue welcomes elite equestrian athletes, horse owners, VIPs, celebrities, young riding hopefuls along with enthusiastic fans gather to enjoy this extraordinary show jumping event. Get Art, Crafts, Music and More

The Lower Hudson Valley’s only corn festival, CORNucopia, returns to Philipsburg Manor in Sleepy Hollow this Labor Day weekend. Featuring a bounty of corn-centric delicacies and a bevy of interactive, corn-related activities, CORNucopia will take place Saturday through Monday, August 30 – September 1, from 10 am to 5 pm each day. All visitors get a free bag of popcorn and other maize-inspired food selections available for purchase include fresh roasted corn, cornbread, corn salad, kettle corn, corn salsa and chips, and corn chili, plus draft beers and draft root beer from Captain Lawrence Brewery. Blue Pig of Croton-on-Hudson will feature sweet corn ice cream.  Activities include a corn shucking contest, a barn dance, corn-husk doll and scarecrow making, and play games like Conk the Crow, Cornhole, and Ring-a-Cob in the CORNival gaming area. Live bluegrass and folk music by the Tappan Cowboys will be heard throughout the day. There will also be open-hearth cooking demonstrations using corn as the main ingredient and kids can enjoy a “mini maize maze.” Philipsburg Manor is a living history museum owned and operated by the non-profit Historic Hudson Valley. All CORNucopia proceeds support its education and preservation mission. September sizzles with a three-day celebration – White Plains Jazz Fest -in downtown White Plains, Tuesday through Sunday, September 2-7. Now in its third year, the highly anticipated event has expanded from three days of performances to a six-day festival that includes Latin, smooth, classic and contemporary styles of jazz – a globally influenced art form that originated in America.  ArtsWestchester will be a significant contributor to this year’s festivities, hosting two events in The Arts Exchange, its historic landmark building on Mamaroneck Avenue, and co-hosting a third event with the White Plains Performing Arts Center. The Southern Westchester (SOWE) Food and Wine Festival is pleased to announce its epic Chef Battle, Graham Elliot vs. Rocco DiSpirito, and musical lineup for 2014.  Musical acts include Gary U.S. Bonds, Marshall Crenshaw, The Ramps and Gil Parris.

The SOWE Food & Wine Festival is a unique culinary celebration showcasing the talents of renowned restaurants, wineries, pit masters, cheese mongers, breweries, specialty culinary providers, spirits producers, chefs and culinary personalities. Hosted by the Scarsdale Chamber of Commerce and The Village of Mamaroneck, the Festival brings community together through food, wine, and beverage sampling, while generating awareness and raising funds to fight hunger, obesity and malnutrition.  This fun-filled weekend also includes music concerts, book signings, cooking demos and even activities for kids.
