About the “Sunday is the new Saturday” Campaign

December 15, 2013 by Inside Press

By Nancy Shenker and Solveig McShea, Chappaqua Millwood Chamber of Commerce

Led by the Chappaqua Millwood Chamber of Commerce, local merchants created a “flash sale” literally overnight and used digital marketing to get word of special deals and Sunday store hours to more than 10,000 shoppers. “We simply declared ‘Sunday is the new Saturday!’ in Chappaqua.” says Executive Director Solveig McShea, who worked with merchants to create the deals between 10 a.m. on Saturday morning and 6 p.m. Saturday night, when the news was spread via Facebook, e-marketing, and “digital word-of-mouth” among the 10,000 members of various local online groups. Local resident Lara Slotnick created the logo, based on a tagline devised by a Chappaqua Mom while chatting on Facebook.

“Our businesses are really committed to compelling people to shop local,” continues McShea and we are committed to finding creative ways to do it! We’re confident that today will be a great shopping day–as soon as people can dig out their driveways.” One local restaurant is promoting its hot soup. “We’ll all need that today,” quips McShea.

Chappaqua Challenge Registration Begins

December 1, 2013 by Inside Press

The Chappaqua Library has begun registering for the Chappaqua Challenge. This fun, low-key reading program has been an annual event since 1983. Fourth, fifth and sixth graders form teams of 3 to 4 friends and read books from a list of twelve over the next four months. Then they write questions about one of the books. During the actual Challenge, which will take place on March 28 at 2 p.m, the teams quiz each other. No score is kept and there are no winners or losers. There’s a party immediately afterwards, and each participant will earn a gift certificate to a local bookstore.

Space is limited, so anyone who wants to participate should register as soon as possible. Visit www.chappaqualibrary.org, or call the Children’s Room of the Chappaqua Library at (914) 238-4779, ext. 3, for more information.

Be the Happy in Someone’s Holiday This Year

November 14, 2013 by The Inside Press

janice good50th Anniversary of MHA Westchester’s Operation Holiday Joy

“I was amazed when I received the gifts I asked for! It was the best holiday I’ve had in a long long time. I will never forget it.” –Note from an MHA Holiday Joy recipient

Join MHA Westchester to make the holidays brighter for individuals, children and their families who would not receive—or be able to purchase—gifts if it weren’t for Operation Holiday Joy.  For 50 years, MHA has helped its neediest by gathering their personal wish lists, matching them to donors, and delivering the new clothing, toys, food and household items in time for the holidays.  It’s a tradition that brings joy to both receiver and giver.

There are many ways to help.  You can sponsor an individual or family and purchase items from their wish list; make a financial contribution and have MHA staff do the shopping; purchase food, clothing, household items or toys that MHA will match to a child or family; or donate store gift cards.  MHA’s holiday gift drive is a great opportunity for groups – schools, churches, synagogues, a department at work—to collectively shop to bring cheer to others.  For more information, call 914-265-7511or e-mail development@mhawestchester.org.

MHA is a community-based non-profit mental health agency that has been helping Westchester County residents for 67.  MHA supports more than 18,000 individuals annually through a comprehensive array of mental health services for all ages at licensed mental health clinics, at home or at a community location.  MHA strives to help each individual to achieve their personal goals and to lead independent lives in the community.  For more information, visit www.mhawestchester.org
