Grace — you’ve certainly gotten a lot of “likes” on this story. Hopefully some of your readers will come to St. Croix. I’d be delighted to host them in our place at Questa Verde, (www.saintcroixcondo.com) but more important is that they visit this little-publicized gem of an island.

That’s why, among other things, I moved here in 1983 and have been here ever since.

We stayed at the DeRocker condo just a few weeks after you (Michael & Grace) and had a similar experience. I second the motion about eat@cane bay and would add they make the best veggie burger I have ever had in my life. Just down the road, Rowdy Joe’s was a favorite of our family (actually our boys, 11 & 13) for their homemade ice cream (vanilla praline won). We ventured to the Divi, not for lunch or dinner but to watch the carb races–another must see to add to your list on your next trip to paradise!

Great article and additional comments. Rob we miss not seeing your smiling face during our ocean swims. The visibility has been astonishing and we had two dolphins swim by last week during our course talk for the Wall to Wall triathlon. The article mentioned quite a number of activities to pursue on St. Croix, but a lot of people don’t know that we have a lot of opportunities for racing: triathlon, many running events including the half marathon, marathon and scenic 50, as well as cycling races and of course sailing. If you wanted, you could participate in a racing event just about every week on island. I moved my family to St. Croix in 2004. People thought we were crazy to leave Boulder, Colorado and move our 6th grader and 9th grader. It was the best decision we ever made as my children thrived in this environment. Both my kids played volleyball and my son sailed in regattas all over the Caribbean. My now ex-husband took over the Otolaryngology practice on island and I was able to actually grow my mainland RN/Life Care Planning/medical expert witness practice. I can work anywhere with my iPad, laptop and cell phone and I spent many hours working at the Yacht Club while my son was in sailing practice or while waiting in line at the DMV. My current husband Scott, who I met at the start line of the 70.3 Ironman in 2004, now spend most of our time living in our beautiful home on the North Shore, but reside in Vail, Colorado in the summer. Another favorite past time on our beautiful island is watching whales from the living room or pods of dolphins! If anyone is wondering about the school system here, we have several private school options. Both of my kids attended Country Day School and my son Ryan went to University of Miami and graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering and has been gainfully employed for 18 months. My daughter received an $80,000 scholarship from University of Miami where she is pursuing a degree as a biomedical engineer. This also a wonderful place to raise young families as well. All you have to do is go on the FB of Julie Sommer to see what an amazing life she and her husband have created for their three small boys. I could go on and on about my passion and love for my island.

Thanks for pointing out the many advantages of renting a condo rather than a villa or staying at a hotel. I don’t think everyone realizes that there is a choice between a private villa and a hotel. As a condo owner at Gentle Winds that rents out my unit (www.CalypsoCondoatGentleWinds.com), I am always happy to see the word get out. I’d also like to add that on the way in to Fredricksted, there is an ice cream store on the left that makes the best ice cream that I have ever had. Don’t remember its name and its just a small store but worth looking for.
