A “Second Step” Toward Helping Children Make Safe Choices

August 16, 2014 by The Inside Press

kisco-kidsBy Ruth Goodman, LMSW

When considering the needs of a child, safety comes first. There are different kinds of safety that are essential for a child’s well-being. Physical safety may be most obvious, however personal safety is equally important. It is never too early to begin teaching a child how to make good, safe choices. The basis for good decision making starts with an ability to identify and articulate one’s needs and feelings. At Mount Kisco Child Care Center, we are dedicated to assuring that all children in our care are taught these skills.

Our teachers are formally trained to employ a curriculum called Second Step. This program teaches a child to verbalize his/her feelings with age appropriate lessons and educational toys. This ability fosters successful interactions with their peers as well as with adults. These positive experiences are the building blocks for high self esteem and confidence. It is our goal to nurture these qualities in each child that we serve. A child who feels good about his/herself is equipped to make positive choices in adolescence and into adulthood.

Experience New York Rock Academy!

April 24, 2014 by The Inside Press

Janet-finalBy Janet Angier

The motivating force at the New York Rock Academy is excitement! Regardless of their level, students land a chance to explore the music they truly love. We help kids and teens create outstanding bands by matching them with others of similar age, taste and playing ability–and then they immediately begin making music! Beginners often find themselves performing complete arrangements of their favorite songs by the end of a single session. Advanced players will fine tune their skills–learning the subtleties of instrumental and vocal technique. Anything that detracts from a moving performance is addressed and remedied. Students learn to communicate the love and excitement they feel to their audience!

The bands are truly what it’s all about! Students are placed into real bands of three to six members according to age and ability. Each day, a faculty band leader directs them and fosters a close-knit team, in which every member plays an important role. Students have unique opportunities to shine both as individuals and as ensemble members. Students choose and may even write the songs they rehearse while the faculty band leader helps them develop the parts they will play.

New-York-Rock-Academys-live-Outdoor-Rock-Festival2The Major provides each student with a course of study in the instrument he or she loves. Students take two lessons a day and play their major instrument in the ensembles. (The material is based on the instructor’s assessment of the student.) Class time is spent fine tuning the songs the students feature in their ensembles and enhancing the technique so as to improve overall playing ability.

Workshops are ultimately a superb way for campers to try something new. Topics include keyboards, voice, rhythm, music history, songwriting, production and promotion. Workshops run daily and change over the course of the week.

Blow away your friends and family during the end of session Rock
Concert!

Janet Angier is the owner/director of Music in Chappaqua and the New York Rock Academy.

You Can Speak Frame in Just Minutes

April 23, 2014 by The Inside Press

judy-framingsSometimes the frame shop experience can be daunting. How can you trust that you’ve chosen the right frame? How do you know it will work on the wall where you plan to hang it?

When I brought my oil painting in to FRAMINGS, in Armonk, I admitted to the owner, Judy Willsey, that I had no skill or confidence whatsoever in choosing a frame. She smiled and told me,”You can do it–I’ll show you how.”

As we stood in the light-filled, corner-sample-packed, front end of the shop, Judy shared her time tested method for analyzing art and picking the right frame. It starts with a few questions. “Ok, first, where is this going to hang?” I tell her it’s for my formal dining room. “So the frame needs to be a little more ‘fancy’ than plain and simple. It’s like clothes. You don’t wear jeans to a black tie affair. Right?” “What’s your style?” was her second question. “Are you traditional, contemporary, eclectic, transitional?” As my eyes run over the 4,000-plus corner samples in the shop, I tell her I’m transitioning from a more traditional style to contemporary.

Judy says, “So, the next part is the most difficult concept. We need to analyze the undertone of the art. If the art has mostly blue undertones, we should be framing it in silver. If it is mostly yellow undertones, we go straight for gold. This way we eliminate half the store in one fell swoop–that makes it easier!” I tell her I think it’s mostly yellow undertone because it’s mostly yellows and greens. “Right!–yellows and greens–that means it will look great in a gold frame or maybe a yellow undertone wood frame.”

The next part was really fun. She tells me to “See if you can define the ‘personality’ of the art. Is it scratchy–is it painted with flat patterns or does it have a lot of brush strokes–is it muted or bright? We need to MATCH the ‘personality’ of the frame to the ‘personality’ of the art.” I’m thinking it has a painterly quality, kind of soft and not too bright. So we head over to the “gold wall” and pull off a few frame samples. “This one is the right color but it’s too traditional, right?” I say. “This one is way way too contemporary and this one has too many lines, right?” The third one has a small ruffled lip with a gently sloping, three-inch wide, mildly distressed, simple gold panel. And the gold is a little muted like the art. I feel like the darkness has lifted and all of the sudden I’m speaking “frame”! I straighten up and blurt out with confidence, “This one is perfect, right?” She tells me, “It’s perfect–absolutely perfect.”

I tell Judy, “Hey, I’m good at this. I should work here.”
