Mind/Body Connection Celebrated at MHA’s Mega Yoga Event

On Wednesday night, the Mental Health Association of Westchester (MHA) held its third annual event, Get on Your Mat for Mental Health. The mega yoga event was to take place outdoors on Court Street in White Plains, but due to inclement weather, the venue was changed to the gym at Woodlands High School in Hartsdale.

Dr. Amy Kohn, CEO of MHA of Westchester, expressed having to move the event indoors was a bit of a letdown, but as the event got underway, she–and over 400 supporters–were not disappointed in the least.

The band, Answer the Muse, played while supporters blanketed the entire gym floor with yoga mats and waited with excitement for renowned yoga teacher, Matthew Sanford.

Matt is the author of the award-winning book, Waking: A Memoir of Trauma and Transcendence. He shares his story of the devastating car accident which claimed the lives of his father and sister and left him paralyzed from the chest down at the age of 13. Now, at 45, Matt is an inspirational trailblazer in the health care community.

yoga1He is the founder of the nonprofit organization, Mind Body Solutions, whose goal, amongst many, is to “transform trauma, loss, and disability into hope and potential by awakening the connection between mind and body.”

Since MHA’s mission statement is, Recovery for All, it seems only natural their organization shed light on the benefits of mind-body connection through the practice of yoga, and MHA could not have found a better teacher.

“Your body is the best home your mind will ever have,” says Matt, as the crowd collectively transitions from downward dog into child’s pose.

What yoga does for the mind-body connection, MHA seems to be doing on a broader scale–extending its reach to promote health and wellbeing to connect us to each other, thereby, creating a deeper sense of community. Namaste.

Simply Theatre!
Play Readings By The Armonk Players
Tonight: ‘night, Mother
by Marsha Norman
directed by Pia Haas
with Christine DiTota and Chris Jamison
Admission: Free (voluntary donations cheerfully accepted)

Nominated for four Tony Awards and winner of the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, ‘night, Mother is an eloquent, enthralling and ultimately shattering play that explores the final hours in the life of a woman who has decided that life is no longer worth living.  How can Thelma convince her daughter that life is worth living if she can’t feel her pain?  With humor, wisdom and keen insight, ‘night, Mother celebrates the glory of the commonplace.  Two seemingly ordinary women, mother and daughter, come to grips with the value of their own lives, and express what many of us have felt at one time or another: why am I here?

Join us for a yummy reception after the play and the opportunity to voice your opinions about the play in a discussion with the actors and director.

No advance ticket sales for this performance.

We perform at Whippoorwill Hall (adjacent to the North Castle Public Library) at 19 Whippoorwill Road East, Armonk, NY 10504 (use the Kent Place entrance, please).  You can get travel directions here.

For up-to-date information, visit our website.  If you would like to make a tax-free donation to the Friends of the North Castle Public Library to support the Armonk Players, you can do so here.

Nearly 450 members of the community, staff, and board members gathered in support of the Boys & Girls Club of Northern Westchester (BGCNW) for its 20th annual Humanitarian Award Dinner Saturday, June 7.

The event –

This year’s dinner raised nearly $500,000 which will benefit the Club’s scholarship initiative, educational programs, and provide services to more than 1,700 youth members. The Club’s signature fundraising event featured award presentations to the Humanitarian of the Year, the John Beach Award recipient, as well as to Club member Cristy Lopez-Duarte who received BGCNW’s 2014 Youth of the Year award.

The gala included a formal dinner following a cocktail reception, and a live and silent auction, featuring hot-ticket items like VIP concert tickets and a spectacular five-course tasting menu for 10 at Crabtree’s Kittle House. The gala was also accompanied by an online auction which ran the weeks leading to the June 7 event.

“I have been a member of the Club since 1958,” Marwell said. “I’ve been a part of it for more than two-thirds of its 75 years. I am immensely proud of this organization on its 75th anniversary. The Club is a tremendous source of pride, joy and satisfaction to me. It is a place that will always have an important place in my heart.”

Marwell, who described the Club as “family affair” – with ties dating back to his grandmother, who sat on the board of directors – joined the BGCNW board himself in 1987. Since then, he has acted as an unflagging supporter and advocate for the Club and the children it serves.

“This is a special evening to celebrate kids, and our 75th year in the business of saving kids: giving them a platform to be themselves, to be real, to excel, and to be productive responsible citizens,” said BGCNW President R. Todd Rockefeller. “We average  600 kids visiting daily;  we serve 250 hot meals per day, and serve some who may not get enough to eat at home; we also send food home weekends to families in need.  None of this happens without great financial and intellectual support from you and countless others over the years.”

The Boys & Girls Club of Northern Westchester is located at 351 Main Street, Mt. Kisco, NY and can be reached at 914-666-8069 or by visiting www.bgcnw.com. For the latest news, photos and updates, please “like” the Club on www.facebook.com/BGCNW and follow on www.twitter.com/BGCNW
