First Time Summer Sports/Fitness Camp at THE GYM of Armonk

May 7, 2013 by The Inside Press

the-gymFor the first time beginning this summer, THE GYM of Armonk is proud to introduce two unique summer camp experiences for community youth: a Sports & Fitness full-day Camp for kids six to nine years of age, and a Basketball Camp for kids age six to sixteen. In addition, a mini camp for three to five-year-olds will be offered in conjunction with the Sports & Fitness Day Camp, providing a fun and active environment @ THE GYM and North Castle Pool & Tennis Club. This is the first year that an outdoor camp is being offered, but both THE GYM and NCPT have many years of experience running successful indoor camps, youth programs, birthday parties and charity events. Transportation between THE GYM and North Castle Pool & Tennis Club will be provided for the various periods throughout each day.

Sports & Fitness Camp
This exciting new program will introduce campers to a dynamic lifestyle by showing them fun and creative ways to stay active. Campers will also be taught the fundamentals of sports that will help keep them motivated to continue participating in these activities for years to come. The campers will go from light fitness sessions to playing soccer to receiving professional swim technique instruction, with one of the goals to keep the kids moving and having fun – with breaks of course! – throughout the day. The hope to provide a safe environment where campers will learn something about sports and exercise, create new relationships with other campers and have experiences that allow them to look forward to coming back year after year. The Sports & Fitness Camp begins on June 10th and runs through August 2nd with one, two and three-week packages available. The full-day camp (ages 6-9) will run from 9:00am to 4:00pm daily, and the mini-camp (ages 3-5) from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

A Basketball Camp @ THE GYM and North Castle Pool & Tennis will also be offered alongside the Sports & Fitness Day Camp for kids age six to sixteen. This program will be run by personal trainer and head basketball instructor Michael Kach, who played at the University of Pennsylvania, and his team of qualified coaches. They will focus on the fundamentals of the game, skills, knowledge building and speed and agility training. The camp will include game and tournament experiences as well as swimming and entertaining games. This program will run from August 26th to August 30th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A high energy, well qualified staff has been selected for both new summer camps, and they all have experience as camp counselors, sports class leaders and birthday party staff. They are mature adults who are looking forward to giving the children in the community a high quality day camp experience that they will remember for years to come. Matt Spallina is the Youth Program Director at THE GYM and Jon Hulbert is a Head Coach with the Condors Swim Club as well as Pool Director/Head Coach at NCPT. Working in tandem, the two facilities will provide daily activities for campers that will include sports, games, fitness-building, swimming, snack breaks and even color war!

“THE GYM of Armonk in conjunction with North Castle Pool &Tennis, have a unique camp because it is offering professional instruction to young children who wish to learn swimming techniques under actual swim coaches, along with strengthening coaches who can teach lifestyle methods to become great athletes,” said Spallina. “We are looking forward to developing young campers into all-around people who can carry the importance of an active lifestyle with them throughout life,” Hulbert further commented. “And with the younger campers, we hope to start the process of teaching them how to have fun while also learning how to become achievers in all facets of their lives.”

Parents may pack a lunch for their child or there will be food for sale at the pool.

WYNDYHYL – “ Chappaqua’s Find of a Century”

April 24, 2013 by The Inside Press

wyndhylThis Queen Anne Victorian homestead has had only two owners in all of its 100+ years!  Samuel Thompson built the house in 1897 and his grandson, Al Hutin, who grew up in the house, lives next door.  The Hutin family sold the home to the Barnes family in 1985, who have mindfully maintained the historic Victorian appearance while adding two bathrooms as there was only one and making some renovations and restorations.

The two-car garage, originally the barn for Mr. Thompson’s horse and buggy, was later converted to hold his Model T Ford, the first in Chappaqua!!!

The house was originally called Fairview because of the view of the Hudson River but Samuel’s daughter christened the house WYNDYHYL in the early 1900’s and it has retained that name to date. This homestead was named an Historical Landmark in 2000, along with our town’s founder, Horace Greeley’s house on King Street. Wyndyhyl was featured in an exhibit at the New Castle Historical Society Headquarters in 1998.  It will also be on the Society’s house tour this May. A New Castle Land marked home has no building restrictions; it is just a historical and prestigious designation.

samuelthompsonEmie Barnes, the owner and listing agent says, “It was love at first sight.  The 9’ ceilings, the wide plank flooring and the wrap around porch just had to be ours!”

Want to Know how to REALLY Lose the last 5-10 Pounds after 40?

By Scott Reilly

“Now that I’m over 40, why can’t I lose those last five or ten pounds?” As a trainer and owner of Prescriptions for Fitness in Chappaqua, this is one of the most frequent questions I receive from our clients. Clients will tell me that in their 20s and 30s all they had to do was diet for a few days–and the weight would come off!!! Well, guess what? You’re not 20 anymore, and neither is your metabolism. What’s the definition of insanity? Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. You can’t keep doing what you used to do, and expect to lose weight.

Simply put, metabolism is the rate at which your body burns calories. Once you reach the magic age of 40, your metabolism will slow down at a rate of 5% per decade. Your body simply stops producing the same amount of hormones. As women age, their estrogen levels drop, and they become more insulin resistant. Insulin helps our bodies utilize carbohydrates (blood sugar) for energy. Insulin resistance also interferes with our bodies’ ability to burn body fat. The stress of everyday life makes your body produce cortisol, a hormone, which in turn, helps your body hold onto fat and store it in the belly area.

And yes, it is absolutely true that men have an easier time losing weight than women do. This is because men tend to carry more lean muscle tissue. Lean tissue helps to rev up your metabolism. Remember, body fat can only be burned inside lean muscle tissue.

Fortunately, there’s also a simple solution! Strength train to build lean muscle, cut your calories, and add short bouts of high intensity cardio to help speed up your metabolism, and finally, you really WILL lose those stubborn excess pounds. Next are some tips on how to really take action and make it happen.

  • YOU HAVE TO WANT IT. This is my numero uno tip. Just saying you want to lose weight is simply not good enough. You have to commit to it. Put it in your schedule just like any other appointment. Commit to 2-3 days per week of resistance training, and additional days of cardio. Consult a personal trainer on designing the most efficient and effective workout for your individual needs. Set a goal with your trainer, and stick to it.
  • Change it up! If what you are currently doing isn’t working, then change it. Change your eating habits, add circuit training to your workout regimen, and start holding yourself accountable.
  • If it’s important to you, you will find a way; if it’s not, you will find an excuse. Stop blaming the kids’ schedule, or work, or anything else. We all lead busy lives. We all have a person who’s body we wish we had. Guess what? They have busy schedules too. The only difference is they make time because it’s important to them, while many people just make excuses.
  • Avoid late night snacks, and drink more water. This is no secret. Stay out of the kitchen after 9 p.m. Reduce your calories from carbohydrates during the day, and add more quality protein, and healthy fruits and vegetables to your diet.

The truth is that many people just lack the will power to lose weight and get in great shape. You owe it to yourself. Commit to your health right now to lose those pounds. Meet with your trainer (at Prescriptions for Fitness, of course!) and create a program of success.

Throw out those “fat person” clothes that we all keep in the closet and buy yourself a great new skinny outfit as a reward for reaching your goals. (Tell your husband you deserve it, and then blame it on me!!! He can call me at 238-0500) Make this up and coming summer the best it can be for you and your family. What are you waiting for?

Scott Reilly is the owner of Prescriptions For Fitness in Chappaqua, a private personal training facilty. Scott and his staff of professional trainers have been helping people get and stay in shape for over 16 years. They work with people with all different goals and needs. From professional athletes to 10-year-old kids, or women with osteoporosis, Scott and his staff can help you get in the best shape of your life.
