August 17, 2021 by The Inside Press

Editor’s Note: We are delighted to present the plans for the Armonk Outdoor Art Show, as described by the Show’s Executive Director, Anne Curran.

Also, since the time the print editions were released, the Armonk Outdoor Art Show has added safety measures to provide a safe and comfortable environment for our volunteers, guests, artists, and sponsors.

Masks are Required for all attendees over the age of 2, and masks must cover nose and mouth while on show grounds and on buses.

Social Distancing is encouraged throughout all areas of the field. Our new layout of artists’ booths with wide aisles will allow visitors to comfortably browse.

Following an online show last year, the Armonk Outdoor Art Show returns to the great outdoors in its beautiful tree-lined setting, at North Castle Community Park, 205 Business Park Drive in Armonk.  For tickets: https://mailchi.mp/armonkoutdoorartshow/2021-10402562

Free family activities will include take-a-away art kits, a scavenger hunt of clues within artist’s displays, an interactive art installation, fun photo ops, and visiting artists who will guide creative pursuits.

Janet Franco’s Abuela’s Cuban Kosher Chicken Soup

August 17, 2021 by The Inside Press

Janet Franco  PHOTO by Donna Mueller

Recipe Notes from Janet Franco

“My husband was born in Cuba and came to the U.S. as a refugee at the age of four. When I met him, he was in medical school and I was a dancer in college. I couldn’t believe he was a Spanish-speaking Jewish person. My family is of Eastern European Jewish ancestry. Over the years, I have learned to embrace the beautiful customs and foods of his heritage. We typically break Yom Kippur fast with this soup, accompanied by garlic bread and lemonade. When the pressure cooker starts rocking and I feel the pangs of hunger and smell the delicious soup that I’ve watched my mother-in-law make all these years, I am filled with a wonderful sensation of all our cultures coming together in a perfect way.

The warming, delicious flavors fill me and link me to generations of families who have overcome so many obstacles to live in this great country. His family came from Spain to Turkey to Cuba to the U.S., and my family from the Polish ghettos to concentration camps to Ellis Island. As our family expands with the introduction of our Greek daughter-in-law, I look forward to seeing our food traditions expand as we embrace and connect with each other around the table.”

Abuela’s Cuban Kosher Chicken Soup

Preparation time: 15 minutes
Cooking time: 40 minutes
Serves: 8-10

Ingredients:
1 tablespoon cooking oil
1 medium white onion, chopped
1 small green bell pepper, chopped
1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
12 cups water or low sodium chicken broth
1 large gold potato, chopped
2 celery stalks, chopped
1 cup dried fideo pasta
1 ½ tablespoons chicken bouillon
1 envelope achiote sazón (optional)
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1.5 pounds bone-in chicken (legs and thighs), cooked
3 corn cobs, sliced in 4 pieces
1 large carrot, chopped
Lime juice
Fresh cilantro (optional)

Directions

Heat oil in a large 5-quart pot over medium heat. Add onion and bell pepper; cook for 5 minutes stirring frequently. Stir in tomato sauce and cook for 8 minutes. Add water or chicken broth and bring to a boil. Add potato, celery and fideo pasa. Season with bouillon, achiote (if using) and cumin. Cook for 15 minutes or until potato begins to soften. Add chicken, corn, and carrot. Cook for 10 minutes more or until carrot is al dente. Serve with a squeeze of lime juice and a cilantro.

Pressure cooker directions

Place all ingredients except fideo, lime juice and cilantro in a pressure cooker. Add water just above half-full. Cook on high for 8 minutes. Quick-release pressure. Add fideo pasta and cook for 3 minutes on high. Release pressure naturally. Serve with a squeeze of lime juice and cilantro.

Editor’s Note: Janet Franco’s recipe, Abuela’s Cuban Kosher Chicken Soup, is also featured in the recipe e-book, The Stories of Our Table, by celebrity chef Pati Jinich and the not for profit, Stand Together.

A Family Life Immersed in and Sharing the Arts

April 2, 2021 by The Inside Press

Dr. Judith S. Schwartz   Photo and Story Courtesy of ArtsWestchester
Professor, curator, critic, author, lecturer, artist and collector, Dr. Judith S. Schwartz lives and breathes the arts–the ceramic arts that is. Her love of ceramic sculpture and studio pottery began as a ceramics student at Ohio State University where she first started collecting ceramic artwork from artist colleagues.

Her support of ceramic artists, and artists in general has never wavered. With thousands of pieces in her collection, including work by Howard Kottler, Viola Frey, Peter Voulkos and Robert Arneson, Dr. Schwartz has always had a collector’s eye and a soft spot in her heart for artists. As an educator, Dr. Schwartz served as Professor in the Department of Art and Art Professions at New York University, where she taught studio classes and mentored Doctoral Students. She pioneered research on the use of satire in ceramic work and turned it into a book Confrontational Ceramics, a study of the history of the use of clay as a tool for social commentary.

The book so inspired ArtsWestchester, where Dr. Schwartz is a board member, that the organization mounted an exhibition, of the same name curated by Dr. Schwartz. Her leadership in the arts has enriched the many boards on which she has serves from the Clay Art Center in Port Chester to the International Academy of Ceramics in Geneva. Dr. Schwartz initiated a project for the International Academy of Ceramics, called “Ceramic World Destinations,” a searchable online resource for ceramic lovers around the world. When not travelling to China, Japan, Korea and places near and far, she and her husband Marty open their Armonk home to arts groups who enjoy their hospitality and their stellar art collection.

After years of success operating Westchester Business Center’s highly regarded main location in downtown White Plains, the team is thrilled to share the news of an additional location opening in Northern Westchester at Chappaqua Crossing this summer.

Chappaqua Crossing is an ideal location to expand the WBC brand given the attractive setting in the recently refurbished Readers Digest Headquarters. It has easy highway access from the Saw Mill Parkway and many available amenities including a Whole Foods Market, Starbucks, and Life Time Fitness all on the property.

Westchester Business Center offers a variety of office solutions for businesses seeking flexible office space for individuals or teams, co-working spaces, day offices and conference rooms, as well as virtual office services. Their current White Plains location has been a home for many Westchester based business professionals providing them with the flexible office space, service and technology they have needed for over 18 years.

As COVID-19 hit New York State exceptionally hard this past year, Westchester Business Center has provided a perfect space for those businesses that are transitioning as well as new businesses just looking to get their feet off the ground.

This new location will boast a total of 29 office spaces, 10 coworking spaces, a Zoom room, a therapy room and provide other essential business amenities such as conference rooms, a fully equipped kitchen, and administrative services.

The official grand opening date of their new location is set tentatively for June 1st, and the sales office is set to open on May 1st. Memberships are currently available at the new location for private offices, team rooms, co-working spaces, and virtual membership.

Behind ‘Team Katz Fights Cancer’

… and a Goal to Raise $50,000 to Fight Blood Cancers

By Spencer Katz

In 2008, I turned four years old. That was the year I had a Backyardigans-themed birthday party and dressed up like Batman for Halloween. It was also the year that I first hear the word “cancer” because that was the year that my mom was diagnosed with lymphoma, a form of blood cancer. I was only in nursery school and too young to really understand the impact of this diagnosis. But I watched as my mom underwent months of chemotherapy, lost her hair, and fought to survive. Luckily, she did survive.

Now that I am 16 and a junior at Horace Greeley High School, I understand the impact of a diagnosis like my mom’s. I have been heartbroken as too many of my friends lost parents to blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma, and I have watched many others fight for survival. And blood cancer, specifically leukemia, is the most commonly diagnosed form of cancer in children and young adults. So I decided to take action to find a cure for blood cancers.

Spencer and his mom, Lisa Katz, a lymphoma survivor

When I was nominated as a candidate in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Students of the Year campaign, I knew that this was the perfect opportunity to raise funds and awareness for the fight against blood cancers. Students of the Year is a seven-week philanthropic competition for high school leaders seeking to make an impact in the fight against cancer. I joined the campaign in honor of my mother and all those who currently are fighting blood cancers, and in memory of those who have lost those battles.

This year’s campaign begins on January 21st and ends with a grand finale on March 11th. The funds raised benefit the LLS mission to find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families. And it can help so many others too–many treatments initially developed for blood cancers are now also helping people affected by many different types of cancer. Since the campaign’s inception in 2014, the Students of the Year program has made an incredible impact for cancer research, patient aid, and community outreach programs.

I am so honored to be able to represent Horace Greeley High School and our entire community in this campaign.

I am aiming high and have set a goal of raising $50,000 to find a cure for blood cancers. Yes, I know that this is an extremely ambitious goal, but I am determined to leave my mark on the fight against cancer to the best of my ability. And I have the legacy of so many loved friends and family as the motivation behind my campaign. My campaign will provide support to the critical work of LLS in hopes that one day no one will have to watch a loved one suffer and fight to survive, or worse, grow up without the ones they love.

Not only is Students of the Year a great way to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, but it is also a great leadership experience for me. Being part of this campaign means so much to be, and I am proud to help my generation be the last to see cancer. I can’t wait to share the exciting updates of the next seven weeks with you. Stay tuned to see what my team and I can accomplish.

If anyone reading this feels as I do, it would mean a lot to me if you would consider becoming part of the cure and making a donation to my campaign. To donate online or for more information, please visit my fundraising campaign website Team Katz Fights Cancer!

And please email me at TeamKatzFightsCancer@gmail.com to share stories of your loved ones impacted by blood cancer. I would love to add them to the list of those I am fighting for. I truly hope that together we can make a true difference in the lives of cancer patients and their families, not just in our community, but everywhere.
